Why?

Because I can't get hulu to work on my eeePC running xubuntu linux.

Any work-around would be appreciated, but I have yet to find a workabel solution.

Hulu, AFAIK, is just a flash app, but requires the installation of a middleman software/browser plug-in ever since Microsoft shoveled money at hulu. MM SW that is not compatible with linux.

Also, hulu has gone viral. I used to be able to watch fox programs, but now they default to hulu.

I guess you could say I just hate MS and its tendency to take open standards and friendly proprietary software and turn it into an unfriendly mess.

Hold on, let me try it in ubuntu and I'll get back to you.

EDIT: If you're using the 64 bit version of ubuntu, you're screwed. You need the i386 version.

Consider getting the latest flashplugin from the adobe website. The flashplugin is the greatest single cause of linux headache in the modern world. Everybody uses it, and the linux version of the flash browser plugin sucks, because nobody uses linux. Probably because the flash plugin sucks.

Works GREAT on ubuntu 8.10 with the flash player installed. Watching Heroes now via ubuntu via VMware.

Well, you CAN intsall the official version and get it to work, but its non trivial. I'm guessing you have one of the non-adobe flash players then?

Hmm, I guess I'll have to try harder. I already tried another flash install, but no dice.

VMWare is not an option on the eeePC 9A, what with the single core Atom processor and minuscule SSD.

I have the official and to my way of thinking it was a trivial installation.

If you would like to do it even easier, there is an automated script

Also try VirtualBox that some of these guys have been talking about. I decided to give it a try this weekend instead of VMWare on my 1000HE, and it runs fine. It's a bit slow (but still quite acceptable) when the Atom processor is set to "power save", but rolls along just as fine as on my desktop when set to "high performance".

It downloads with executable permissions? I don't know everything about linux, but I always have to chmod downloaded stuff before it will run.

Not necessary to have exe permissions when you run it this way:

What? Installing the official version is super trivial. Open Synaptic, search for "flashplugin-nonfree" and install. Course, if you want to use the command line, feel free, but don't try to convince people it's necessary.

I've done nothing else to flash except the above, and Hulu works fine in Ubuntu 8.10 x64.

I have met with success, given your assistance.

Now my wife can watch her favorite shows at her leisure and may just commandeer the eeePC 900A. Which is fine by me, since I'll then snag her current IBM T41, which I have had a hankering to install linux on ever since I bought it as a refurb from Microcenter.

I was talking about the official adobe flash version, and getting the i386 version to work with an x86_64 system. I didn't even know there was a useful version not from Adobe. You learn something new every day.

The bit I pasted installs the 64-bit version that was released by Adobe in November 08

There must be a 32 option/version in the install script, as my eeePC 900A is a 32 bit machine.
