Fired for Twitter
« on: April 04, 2009, 12:24:01 PM »
My boss's wife works at a regional electronics retailer.  One of her coworkers in purchasing is very self absorbed.  He signed up for twitter and added all kinds of folks to his list, all coworkers (who promptly delete them), his vendors, and even a number of the competitors.

Mr Genius then starts posting about all the awesome deals he is getting from the distributors that nobody else can get.  The deals were special arrangements with the company, this guy had nothing to do with negotiating them.  Obviously, the distributors were upset the terms got out, his competitors were upset at the distributors, and finally he was fired over it because the distributors cut all the sweetheart deals and this company's cost of goods went up a point or two.

Well, yeah, but not to worry about him, eh? He's got a rosy future in Washington, D.C.

I am severely confused, here.

I'm guessing that if he didn't have twitter, he would have found some other way to screw up especially if he talked to competitors regularly.  Twitter just documented it very nicely.

I'm not in a position to know any of that information, but my company annually sends out an anti-trust card and note telling us we are not supposed to talk about stuff like that with competitors or others.  I think it is mostly just a constant reminder not to talk about contract terms and such.  At least, that is how it would apply to me.

All I know is, one of our local talk show guys had a phase where every other sentence involved "tweeting" or "following."  Sounded stupid to me.  But apparently all the politicians are "tweeting."  And apparently the Twitter is dominated by conservatives, or so I heard from one of the Tea Party planners.

I think I might look into it, as long as I didn't have to "tweet," or become a follower.

These are real, found via http://search.twitter.com/ (Note: I know none of these people personally):

I still don't see what the great thing about it is. Almost like someone put the words "twit" and "chatter" together, and then got rich.

He's not fired because of twitter, he's fired for revealing proprietary corporate information.  The tool he used for it does not matter.

Thanks for that insight.

Probably right - some people, including some who are highly educated, are devoid of common sense.

Some years back a guy at work (different division) was ordering a lot of office & computer supplies . . . and selling them on the side.

He advertised them for sale in various places, including in the classified section of the company newspaper.

I've used Twitter on very rare occasion. In fact, last fall I tried it a little bit while I was deer hunting. My wife was working much of the week and just wanted me to check in every once in a while. Since she can't use her cell phone in the hospital, but has web access via computers, Twitter let me send quick text messages about where I was and when.

I also used it to provide updates to our families, while our kids were competing in some out-of-town hockey tournaments.

Aside from that, I don't have the time, energy or inclination to share details of what I'm doing. Nor do I care what other people are doing.

BTW, the term "tweets" is damned near a deal-breaker for me. My best friend has been living the full-blown tech life (programmer for a major software company in San Jose since '95 or so) and his opinion of Twitter is that it's just a huge time sink. He's commented that the folks who use it the most are often the least productive, due in large part to the amount of time that they spend sending updates and following the minutiae of others.

So 280: what'd they do when they caught you?

I have a blog, and accounts on a couple networking sites (which I use for just that). Otherwise, I don't get it either...
