Need anti-virus, not Avira
« on: May 14, 2009, 05:52:32 PM »
I am setting up a computer for my Dad's use.  I had Avira on it, but that has made it lock up a couple of times when trying to download updates, and even crashed it on the first attempt to install.

What program would you recommend?

It is an older Gateway computer (2001), using Windows XP Home.

I'd prefer freeware, but any recommendations of arm-and-a-leg-ware would also be appreciated.  Dad's payin' so...   =)

Pre-emption:  Why, yes, I have heard of Ubuntu.  :P

I use PestPatrol from Computer Associates.  IIRC it's $39 a year.  CA seems to do a very good job of keeping it updated.

BitDefender, the "Internet Security" Family Edition version.  Install on three computers, two year license.  Easy on the resources.  $46.99 at Newegg.

AVG seems to work pretty good for a free anti-virus solution.

I used to use AVG, but it's gotten pretty bloated the last couple versions and was bogging down my system. I've switched to Avast! and like it pretty well so far.

I tried Avast for a while, but it just never made any sense to me.  Too many confusing options.   =(

Used to use AVG, but it got too bloaty for my 6YO hardware.

Avira is what I use.  Not freeware, but nagware.

Try using it in a managed format in a network.

It does have its quirks, but the multitute of options and settings has made it usefull in my work environment where I can tweek the protection to match the type of macine it is installed on.

Norton is the devil, don't do it.

I use AVG and Avast, I like Avast a little better.  AVG is a little annoying.

Oh crap.  I had Bit Defender on there, and all was going well.  Until I scanned for "rootkits," and it just crashed again.

I used chkdsk c:/r, but after it was done, it just started Windows.  Is no news good news?
