Planning my first Cruise
« on: June 14, 2009, 01:10:16 AM »
I recently managed to get my hands on a couple extra thousand bucks and have decided to take my wife on her first cruise.  There's a planner here in town, but I was also hoping to get some input from some of you who have personal experience with regard to pricing, timing, planning, and any details that I might need to know for my first time.  Anything you guys can share would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

You're in luck. We have guided boat tours of the Milwaukee harbor, and I can get you tickets for just a couple of thousand dollars.

If you're not picky about where you go, ask of course what deals there are.  Don't forget to account for airfare to/from the port, transfers from the airport to the port, and tips for crew members.  A good travel agent should sell you a package that covers all that.  Also check with orbitz, etc.
Most things on the cruise are free, such as entertainment, food and non alcoholic drinks.  Booze, gifts, and anything from the ships store is not included.  Any shopping and excursions in the ports are also not included.  You will need a credit card to give the cruise line so you can get a ship card, because they are pretty much all cashless.  However, you'll want cash for any shopping in the ports.
You may need a passport, and those are taking a while, so get on the ball and get that done now.
Have fun!

With my vast experience of exactly 1 cruise, I'll chime in.  What's your nearest embarkation point?  That will be a big piece of your expense, if you have to fly on your own nickel.  I really enjoyed our Princess Lines Alaskan cruise, and would recommed it to anyone.

Now, I'm not sure about you, but I'm not a big fan of the crowds.  Instead of a cruise, have you thought about out of the way places like Punta de Mita, Mexico?  Near Puerto Vallarta, I've rented an apartment there for a bit, and it was amazing.  It's a tiny little surfing village.  Little out of the way places where your money goes right into the local economy and the locals take you to cool places that they grew up around.  I've had great luck doing this.
