Funny People was not very funny
« on: August 08, 2009, 10:06:05 PM »
Went to the movies tonight and saw the Adam Sandler movie Funny People.  Some parts were funny, but it seemed really long and not too many laughs while watching it.  My advice - don't waste your money.   =|

The last Adam Sandler movie that was watchable was Anger Management, and Jack Nicholson's wacky character deserves most of the credit there.

Frankly, the only film with Adam Sandler I've ever really enjoyed was Little Nicky.  There is just something wonderfully comedic about seeing "...a dear sweet man.  Mr. Henry Winkler.   COVERED IN BEES!"

Billy Madison had it's moments (a few, anyways - mostly Brigitte Wilson's doing, though, and not due to COMEDIC value ), but Happy Gilmore was HILARIOUS, IMO.  The Bob Barker scene alone was worth the price of admission.

I really didn't care for Little Nicky or Mr. Deeds (caught most of each on one of the movie channels), and couldn't take more than 15 minutes of You Don't Mess With The Zohan.  Utterly terrible.  Fortunately, I didn't pay for it (we get free On Demand movie channels from our TV provider - Cox Cable at the time, though FIOS, who we're with now, does the same).

For a real change of pace from Sandler, which I thought was pretty good, try Reign Over Me, with Don Cheadle.  Adam Sandler in a SERIOUS role - who knew he could actually act?

Happy Gilmore was hilarious. Punch Drunk Love on the other hand, was so bad I couldn't get more than 15-20 minutes (which felt like about 3 1/2 hours) in before turning it off.

It appears I lucked out because The Waterboy and Happy Gilmore are the only movies of his that I have.  =)

Punch Drunk Love is basically Sandler as a combination of several of his characters, except trying to be taken seriously. Yeah it was also dull. I forgive them however, as it has Emily Watson in it and she is kewl.

Was "Funny People" really meant to be a typical Adam Sandler comedy?

I took the previews and ads as it being more of a dramatic story albeit about comics and thus containing a lot of jokes.

thats what i thought it was. or rather, aimed towards a more indie audiance.

Whats interesting is that's the take I got from the previews, too.

Happy Gilmore is pretty much the only Sandler movie I like.

I liked a few Adam Sandler movies, which is why I went to see this one.  Big Daddy was pretty funny and a few of the others like Waterboy.  I also saw Bedtime Stories (I think that was earlier this year) and it was pretty good as well.  I guess this movie may be funny to some people, but I wasn't all that amused.  It did have some funny parts, though, just few and far between IMO

Agreed - although it was right at the limit of the level of stupidity I can take in a film and still enjoy it (I liked Dude, Where's My Car? as well, but couldn't stand the Dumb and Dumber series, for further examples of my personal line in the sand, as it were).  The Wedding Singer was also good - actually, IMO, better than Happy Gilmore, though it was a different sort of movie.  Not a "stupid comedy", as I think of it.

My wife and stepkids said that Bedtime Stories was pretty good, too.  Haven't seen that one yet, myself.
