On the subject of swearing: it has always been common among certain groups in society. People swore back then, some profusely. The thing is many of the swear words were extremely different. Take Romeo and Juliet, that stuff is as crude as anything shown in movie theaters today. If everyone understood everything in Shakespeare's plays they would never be taught in school.

The 1800's are much closer to today, however I'm sure many of the words were still different. I haven't seen the show in question but I know the F word is relatively new.

Do a little google magic, F word and C word have been around before American settlement.

Victorian society did a good job with history to think that people weren't vulgar back then, but yet they were.

Don't have HBO or Showtime, someone recommended Deadwood and we got it from Netflix and loved it.  Got us started on Dexter, Six Feet Under and now The Sopranos.  Much better than TV in general and one hour episodes are easier to watch on week nights than 2 hour movies.  It's the writing, always, that makes these shows so good...
