WWII-era Weapons cash found under kibbutz
« on: September 24, 2009, 01:09:48 PM »
Interesting video. Looks like they stored the weapons in long, thin metal barrels that the water eventually made it into, unfortunately rendering the weapons useless. Still an interesting watch. All in Hebrew, of course.

I spotted Garands, Mausers, Enfields, Stens, Brens, and at least one MP40 (or similar).

from jonny c. on gunboards:

Quote
Pre-1948, most Israeli kibbutzim and moshavim had stashed weapons (called "slicks"), hidden from the British and the expected arrival of Rommel. During the War of Independence, most were used, or at least brought out to above-ground armories. A 97 year-old resident of Kibbutz Ein Hashofet recently divulged the location of one "slick" that had remained hidden. I used to live on that kibbutz and actually ran the regular armory for over 2 years. There were always rumors about forgotten caches...believe me, I looked. I did find one or two little stashes of ammo and emergency supplies, but they usually dated from the 1950s or 60s. I thought you guys might get a kick out of the opening of this "lost slick".

A lot of the Hebrew is actually a song text, rather than actually relevant. But there's also interviews with the Kibbutz members. Summary is that everybody knew that guns were hidden somewhere, but nobody knew where. Only three men knew where it was, but two of them died. Eventually the 97-year-old guy told the secret. The last guy interviewed is amazed to find out that it was his father that built the hideout.

Pretty cool, except for the water damage.

Just as well, I assume based on what I know about Israeli gun laws it would have all been destroyed.

Pretty much all you can get is a handgun permit, and the government is increasingly stingy with them. Is that essentialy correct Micro?
I promise not to duck.

97 years old?!?!

What in the wide, wide world of sports was he waiting for?

Sadly, AJ Dual is being... extremely optimistic.
