Feels like.........
« on: November 16, 2009, 10:52:50 AM »
Got up early this morning to get a jump on the day.  Went by the thermo and it was 22 degrees outside.  Brrrrr!  Started my morning pot of coffee and took a hot shower (red skin afterwards is just right) and sat down at the trusty computer.  Looked up the weather and Yup it said 22 degrees, AND THEN SAYS FEELS LIKE 22 degrees.  Huh? of course it feels like 22 degrees cuz it is 22 degrees! ???

They are referring to the effects of windchill or humidity.

I'm sure you are well aware that it can be 22 and feel like 10.

It's just another example of dumbing down society. Rather than refer to windchill they use the catch-all "feels like".
I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.

So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you also were meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought

Isn't the "feels like" supposed to be an approximation of humidity or windchill?

When I lived in minnesota, the thermometer might read -10*F but the news would report it was -10* with a 20 degree windchill for a -30* temperature... or in the summer they would approximate an increase in heat with a humidity index.

Edit:  mak beat me to it.

All I know is, here in dallas it was so muggy and warm yesterday that we fired up our air condition in the apartment...it was nearly 80F in there. This morning, it was windy and freezing (less than 50F is freezing here).
Maybe a rare occurence, but then you only have to get murdered once to ruin your whole day.

Yup.  Most weather reports give wind chill approximations these days, too.

Big difference on exposed skin when it's 22 degrees on a calm day, vs. 22 degrees on a windy day.   ;)

Wind chill is an annoying statistic.
If you are outside and its below zero, you're going to cover as much of your exposed skin as possible so wind chill makes little difference.

I remember last year or the year before, the Milwaukee media was overstressing the rare occurance of -30 to-40 degree wind chills- big woop sissies. Try living in -40 degree weather for a few weeks in areas of Central Wisconsin where its very flat with few trees and the wind gusts at 20-30 mph all the time.

Brimic,

I do.

And I still appreciate the Wind Chill Factor numbers - if only to know how much I have to bundle up before heading outdoors.

Shoveling snow on a calm 20 degree day vs. a windy 20 degree day makes a big difference.  I'll probably overheat on the former, and risk frostbite if not protected on the latter...

Winter has wind chill, but summer has THI, or Temperature Humidity Index.

Its up to 44 right now, so I definitely feel twice as warm as I did earlier. :O

Of course I know about other mitigating factors in apparent weather conditions.  Like weather you have had one beer, or more than that.  Weather you are at the beach with girls in skimpies and your wife catches you looking.  I was young once too! =|

About 40 here now and it feels like 20 :(

Been out sitting on the hill most of the morning in the wind looking for deer.  They all seem to have vamoosed the last few days.   =|

It's about 78 here but it feels like 72.4.

It's about 58 here but it feels like I need to take a whiz...
