I am so confused about XM-ready car stereos. Help?
« on: December 03, 2009, 06:04:32 PM »
For Christmas, would like to buy my wife a "boombox" for her XM Roady XT so she can listen to her XM in the house.

I've read that plugging and unplugging the Roady XT unit (to go between the boom box and the car) will wear and possibly damage the unit, so I would like to make it possible for her to keep the Roady plugged into the boom box all the time and open an additional account to go with the following gift.

For our anniversary (2 days after Christmas), I would like to buy her a new head unit for her car that will receive XM channels.  I am seeing there are head units that are listed as "XM ready" but require a tuner.  Are there any truly XM-ready car stereos that are truly stand-alone XM ready without the need for an additional XM receiver?  Is there a different term I should be using when looking for receivers that serve as tuners (if they even exist). If I have to purchase a tuner regardless what the unit is, I'd like to know before I continue searching.  I really am confused.

I was looking into the JVC KD-R800, but it looks like it may need a tuner to use XM.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

BTW, I love the idea of bluetooth for the JVC as we're likely to switch to Verizon for the Droid in February when our contract Sprint expires.  I'm thinking she might be able to stream music to the stereo from the Droid.

Thanks in advance!

To heck with it.

Thanks for that link Sanglant.  It looks as if all "XM Ready" radios still need a tuner, so rather than change out the head unit, I'm going the slightly different route of buying her a receiver that will be better suited to take back and forth than the Roady she has now (with the reputation of a fragile plug).

A Delphi XpressRC receiver for Christmas:

Plus an Audiovox Xpress Boombox (to dock the receiver to) for the anniversary:

Equals a compatible package she'll be happy with

Seems like you've found a good solution.  =)

Might I suggest purchasing the receiver from NewEgg.com, though?

Also, the Delphi you're looking at is pre-order, ship date uncertain. Just wanted to point that out and point out the Audiovox one for $130.  ;)

Newegg, is good and ships fast. The only reason i start at crutchfield for car stereos is that they give you the wiring harness and a guide to taking the dash off and putting it back on. =D
The only good thing in going to a xm ready receiver i can see is, it will make the car dash look cleaner, some of 'em look awful to have to use though. :-X
One last thing i will say is, "if your getting a headunit with a fold down face, make sure it doesn't have a ribbon cable to the face plate" i lost my pioneer(best headunit i've ever had) to that blasted cable going bad [tinfoil]

P.S. i hope that made sense  =|
