AR Mags

I don't know if any of you have seen this or not, but Bravo Co is still selling Brownell's 30 round AR mags for $8.99.  I have found Brownells mags to be well built and reliable.

A friend bought a couple of these for his DPMS AR10.  I didn't know P-mag had ventured into 308 yet.

Of course, I see 44mag.com has its D&H mags for $8.99 also.

I have gun show in Houston on 1/2/10.  I am curious if the prices on AR parts and such are going down or getting discounted as the Obama buying spree has subsided.

Prices like that on mags are normally the type that I wait for to stock up.  I already have plenty and that begs the question of how many mags is too many?  Or not enough?

I try to keep 14 mags per gun.  Some guns that's more practical than others.  I have a FNAR and the mags are $50 a piece, so I only have 4.  I have one 20 rd AR mag that I use 90% of the time though, most of the others just get run through twice or thrice to make sure they are working.  I also have buttloads of mags that I don't have a gun for... I've got a bunch of bulgarian AK mags and I don't even currently have a rifle that runs them.

Thanks for showing me those magpul .308s.... another nudge pushing me towards the edge of building up a .308.

I don't currently own an AR, but I have 50 P-Mags loaded up in a footlocker.  I really do need to get an AR :)

I've not used the Brownell's mags, but if they're reliable, $8.99 ea is a great price.

Jackdanson,

I don't want to sound like a fanboy, but Crusader Arms is building an AR10 style rifle that takes good ol G3 mags ( the kind that cost under 3 bones a piece...)

Food for thought, if you're serious about buying a semi .308 that isn't a FAL or M1A.

*ahem*  Would they happen to be pre-ban or at least not obviously post-ban?  Would you like to trade them for some US dollars?

Hopefully I'll be getting another AK here soon.  I've been trying to get my friend's saiga on the cheap so I can convert it.

I guess I need to look that up.  I have PTR-91 and a bunch of mags, but that PTR has about the same recoil impulse as the 300 Win Mag bolt rifle I am trying to sight in for my Dad.  It works well, but it is no fun to shoot.

I also heard that someone was making one that took M1A mags, but I have no idea who.

Their Slipstream lube is simply awesome.  Anything that can make a Glock action feel like a Krag is nothing short of miraculous in my book..

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who's purchased magazines before he had the matching firearm.  ;)

I've tried Brownell's magazines and so far, function has been flawless. It's my understanding that they DO supply one or more branches of the US military.

I believe I heard Brownells makes their own mags also.

If you buy and load 50 P-mags, aren't you right up there with the price of an inexpensive AR?

Actually moreso.... assuming $10/mag (never seen them that cheap) and $0.15 a round (cheaper than I can handload, I think) you're looking at $725.  My last delton build came in at a smidge over $600, with a couple upgrades.  Guns are cheap; ammo, mags, cleaning supplies, and reloading supplies is where the hobby gets expensive.

Actually, many retailers were selling off their stocks of PMAGs for $10 each to make way for the most recent generation (the ones that allow you to snap the dustcover on the bottom of the mag). The generation being sold off was just fine, though, at a bargain at $10 apiece.

And I completely agree that the gun is the cheap part of the equation.

Going back to one of my questions that jack answered.  My target for rifle mags is normally 10, but that is a minimum and normally just a starting point.  For AR's or AK's, I think I have more.  For stuff like my Saiga 223 conversion, I stopped at 10 partly due to cost.  For pistols, I use the 6 or 8 number.  I normally only use 2 or 3 mags at any given time so that leave 3 to 5 as spare.  I try to buy only OEM mags, so that can still get expensive.  The one mag I regret not buying more was the bakelite 5.45X39 mags.  Those fit my AK74 clone the best and were cheap at one time.  I haven't seen them under $25 in a while.

I agree that most AR mags are not $10, but if you wait around for sales, you can normally find decent prices.  IMO, you get your minimum then sit back and wait for a good deal.  If you get on the email lists of a lot of the online dealers, you shouldn't miss the sale.

In my more naive days, I used to buy all my mags at gun shows.  Considering the quality I often got and the problems, that wasn't a good idea.  Sometimes I knew what I was getting, many times, the mags were just cheap knock offs and were overpriced at that.  I think even now I can go to the gun shows in Houston and find a guy selling G3 mags for $20 or more each.

Yep - I had a dealer friend of mine offer them to me at cost for this reason.  I had the components on hand, so I went ahead and loaded them and stored them away.  I intend to pick up an AR soon, so it just made sense.
