Making a move- Any Vegas residents (past or present)?
« on: January 25, 2010, 09:45:34 AM »
My wife is a flight attendant for Southwest, she recently switched bases from Chicago to Las Vegas.
Since we took in her two grandkids this past summer, she has been working twice as much to keep up.
This has been so hard on her that we have finally come to the conclusion that we must move to live in her base city so she can be close to us, and so she can maintain her sanity.

Fortunately the housing market is prime for purchasers there.  And the market didn't impact our region quite as hard so we won't take too much of a loss on the sale of our home here (S.E. corner of the KC metro area)

So I'm(we) moving to Vegas.
Slap it on me.. what are the pros and cons.
Besides the obvious pro of no income tax and warmer weather (just experienced the coldest winter in 15 years here)
So far I'm pretty certain we want to live on the west side of town from the north or to the south.  Though I'm still looking into the best neighborhoods.
Our oldest grandson will be starting highschool, and we are looking for the best private christian school with a football program, that we can afford.

I know I can find work just about anywhere there.

The biggest con is the handgun registration of Clark County. I'm not happy about that at all.  However I have been reading some stuff to indicate that it may see it's death in the near future.

At any rate I'm Vegas bound this year, so any input would be greatly appreciated.

We considered it as a move from Utah, but buried the idea in favor of the south or east coast.
NLV has some pretty draconian gun laws and treatment of gun owners from what I understand.

Lots of desert to go play in, which would be awesome.  Lake mead is close by, too.

FIL lives in North LV.  He's retired from the USAF and Travelers.  He's not a gunny.  So the gun laws don't affect him.  They do set side a certain amount of $$$ for gambling each month and once that's gone, they stop until the next month. * They treat it like a hobby, to have something to do and have fun, not as a way to make money.
They got a nice house and live pretty well.

Way too easy to go broke quickly out there if you don't have the discpline to walk away from the tables when you should.

Veloce,

Have your wife check on the Southwest Airlines discussion board. I'm sure they have one. Or, have her call the LAS base supervisor for local information.

I've visited there many times, but I don't know enough to help.  Although, I will say to live in an area that doesn't involve a commute near the strip.

I'll have to add that I have ZERO interest in gambling. I can do that here if I were so inclined.
If I did any gambling I'd see it as money spent at an arcade.
*Thanks for the info so far- keep them coming :) *

Not sure if it's an issue for you, but the LV economy has been hit pretty hard.  Lot of half-finished construction.

I live in Reno, about 8 hours north, I love Nevada.  I don't care for LV.  The world in LV centers around the strip and the casinos.  LV is heavily democrat, mostly californians moved in and pushed the balance to the left.  Years past, there was democrat Vegas and the rest of the state pulled right and overruled them.  Since the bust, I don't know.  I don't gamble so no draw there.   If you are a hunter, the only thing we don't have is moose and grizzly.  Elk, deer, prong horn, big horn sheep, yotes, cougar and most any fowl.

I didn't even think about the fact that I'll be able to have some influence on ousting that schmuck.
Although I was looking forward to placing my vote against our wonderkids Cong. Emanual Clever (Rev my a$$) and the annoying motherSenator Claire McCaskill

My wife is meeting up with an agent tomorrow, so she will get some hands on viewings.
I'm planning on heading out there in a couple weeks to do some more driving around to get more of a feel of the area we want to do some serious searching in.
