Battling mice!
« on: January 24, 2010, 07:48:33 PM »
The wife and I both have GE wireless mice.  Ordinarily we both sit at the dining room table with our laptops and do our own thing.  Lately whenever she starts using her mouse, mine goes haywire. We even swapped mice and hers still messes with mine. ???  Doesn't respond, goes up instead of down, etc.  I can only guess it is like having RC cars, with frequencies messing with each other.  But why even if we swap does hers (which was mine) still mess with mine?

She is sitting over in my recliner now and both mice are working fine.  What's up with that?

I suspect the frequency is set on the host machine, not the device.  Check your settings on the laptop and see if there's a way to change RF settings.

Barring that, one of you should get a different brand mouse.  That'll probably fix it as well.

Sorry, GS, but that sounds kinda funny.

You do look up from the opposing laptops and gaze lovingly at each other every now and again, right?

Or at least email each other, at a minimum.

Hmmm....the wife and I both use the same kind of wireless trackball and we're practically touching shoulders. Only time I see one of our trackballs act this way is when the battery gets low or when there's fuzz inside the ball cavity.

I hate it when that happens.

There might be a DIP switch on the side of the wireless receiver that plugs into your computer's USB port.  If there is, try changing it on one of the computers, then re-synchronize it to the mouse (there's usually a song and dance routine where you hit a button on the receiver, then on the mouse, and they sync up).

Wireless doo-dads like that usually run on Bluetooth, which is intended to be a very short range system.  Being across the room might weaken the enemy signal enough so that your mouse's is dominant, but a distance of 2 feet or so isn't enough differentiation.

Just thoughts spewed forth to you from the innernetz.

No, actually we text each other.  That way we have a record of what was said, so there isn't any misunderstanding later. =D

I'm sure you married guys understand.

Unfortunately, there's still "imterpretation" involved at some point(s). This is always subject to change baswed on the circumstances.

You are correct in your assessment Sir.  Although English is our base language, I do at times feel like I am talking a foreign tongue from the look of non comprehension on her face.  And admittedly, she feels the same way.  I don't think them thar folks are wired the same as usn's. (No G98 that is not sexist, just reality)

When my wife and I used to play WoW together we'd often talk in game, depsite being in the same room. :)

How'd you get your wife to play WoW?

That would be interesting to know, Balog.

We don't play WoW, but my wife does play Lord of the Rings Online with me. Actually she plays it a fair amount more than I do. I think MMORPGs are more likely to appeal to women than other video game types, due largely to the social aspect of it. She was already in the video game "door" when we met; she owned a Wii, and had more games than I did at the time. Some time after we got married I had her try out LoTRO, and she immediately took to it. Recently she took to Mass Effect and played that all the way through once, and has a 2nd character she's played partway through on, and is looking forward to Mass Effect 2's release tomorrow.

I think it's mostly a personality thing. Some women like video games fine, some can't stand them, and some are somewhere in the middle and can be swayed one way or the other, some will never play anything more than casual games, some will play anything at least some.
