Wouldn't be surprised if it's a sandwich of sheetrock / stud / firewall structure / stud / sheetrock.  The air space is common to both sides where everything was studded out from the firewall.

I'd rather have wood studs if I was hanging something expensive on a wall.
On two occasions, I have been asked [by members of Parliament], "Pray, Mr. Babbage, if you put into the machine wrong figures, will the right answers come out?" I am not able to rightly apprehend the kind of confusion of ideas that could provoke such a question.

Me too.

Metal studs are fine if you use the right anchors.

I think I found the right anchors.  They're rated to 50lbs each and I plan to use 6 or more spread between two studs (along with other attachments).  The TV is just under 50lbs, the DVD player and FIOS box weigh about 12lbs, the stand feels like it weighs about 30lbs.  The Wii is only a few pounds.  That's right around 100lbs.

The other issue with slapping the Vesta mount on the wall is the ugly cable routing factor

The pylon lets you hide the snake

The mount I bought hides the cables as well.  The cable from the wall jack and the power cord will be visible, but everything going from the cable box and DVD player to the TV is hidden.
