Government Subsidized Vacations for the Poor!
« on: April 20, 2010, 09:45:22 AM »
Quote
The European Union has declared travelling a human right, and is launching a scheme to subsidize vacations with taxpayers' dollars for those too poor to afford their own trips.

Quote
The plan -- just who gets to enjoy the travel package has yet to be determined -- would see taxpayers footing some of the vacation bill for seniors, youths between the ages of 18 and 25, disabled people, and families facing "difficult social, financial or personal" circumstances. The disabled and elderly can also be accompanied by one other person.

Quote
Northern Europeans will be encouraged to visit southern Europe, and vice versa.

Funny how your mind rejects nonsense.

I read the thread title and thought, "Big deal, I don't have a problem with government subsidizing vaccinations."

Then I clicked it and my mind had to deal with the anti-sense. (It's beyond nonsense at this point.)

I wish I could say I was surprised, though.
I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.

So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you also were meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought

Just lovely. I'm guessing that I will be one of those who pays for other to travel in the years to come, while still being so broke I can't travel, yet "rich" enough not to qualify.
It's official then - I will do my outmost to not hold any "official" job during the next 6 years of university. I'll be damned if I pay anything into this. Odd jobs here and there, cash in hand seems to be the future. After that, hopefully a Green Card. And no more EU sillyness for me.

You're going about this the wrong way.

Had they wanted to help the 'poor', they'd just given them a sum of money which they could use on vacations if they chose to.

In this form, this is just a pile of money for the tourism industry. Guess who lobbied for this.

I saw this as well. Pretty funny. It would only be funnier if it was an Onion headline.

I don't go on very many vacations. If I do go someplace, it usually isn't too far away or very expensive. I've also noticed that some people who like to travel a lot also usually have lots of debt which can make them poor. So they need to get a subsizided vacation as a reward?

What the @*$^ @$#!^$@*% @&#$^ !#*&$ #&@*^! on a cracker! I had to sign away six years of my life to go see the world, not to mention get shot at in the process. Why didn't someone tell me back then that all I had to do was get a student visa, move to England, and just become another leech sucking on the government teat?

here is a point of view that could be construed to give support to the op.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freedom_of_movement

Quote
Freedom of movement, mobility rights or the right to travel is a human rights concept which is respected in the constitutions of numerous states. It asserts that a citizen of a state, in which that citizen is present, generally has the right to leave that state, travel wherever the citizen is welcome, and, with proper documentation, return to that state at any time; and also (of equal or greater importance) to travel to, reside in, and/or work in, any part of the state the citizen wishes without interference from the state. Some immigrants' rights advocates assert that human beings have a fundamental human right to mobility not only across states but across nations. Ray Ybarra, an immigrants rights activist and filmmaker, coined the concept of human mobility to apply to international freedom of movement. According to Ybarra, human mobility is a fundamental human right.

Correct.  Positive rights, you know.   =)
