I always read those four guys died very shortly after this pic was taken.
Shame.

Not to nitpick, but Wikipedia says the iconic photo was taken on February 23, 1945, and the battle for Iwo Jima ended on March 26.  What happened on Iwo 65 years ago today?

(I trust this isn't April Fools Mischief(tm)).

April 1st, 1945. US forces launch invasion of Okinawa during WWII.

OP's picture isn't from this battle at all.

Operation Iceberg (The invasion of Okinawa) happened on this date.  Easter Sunday and April's Fools Day.  And boy did the Japanese have a trick in store for us......
Some days even my lucky rocketship underpants won't help.

Read and/or watch Flags of Our Fathers.  Actually there are 6 in that photo and 3 didn't make it off the island.  And actually this was the second flag raised that day.

Only two defining forces have ever offered to die for you, Jesus Christ and the American Soldier.  One died for your soul, the other for your freedom.

Didn't they do it first on Pelelui?  It didn't work.  Just made a lot harder.  I would think the kamikazes the 'trick' to talk about.

One thing I remember from With the Old Breed was that after they finally fought their way across the island, they had to turn around and patrol back across looking snipers.  That had to suck.

Huh?  IIRC, several lived for quite some time later.  I don't have the particulars, but at least two of them made it home, one had a long life.

IIRC, one of the flag raising Marines was an American Indian from Arizona.
