Metal chips are in the power steering system, somewhere, is my bet.  =|

Does it steer right, without the power assist?

I'll pretend to be C&SDaddy (he's on the way here). It does steer right, just no power assist.

Okay, that eliminates the easy stuff (disconnected tre, jammed log up in the works, etc).  Sounds like the pump and linkages are okay.

The cheap, easy, first effort would be to flush out the old fluid, and replace with new.  Some ps systems have little orifices within the steering boxes that allow fluid to flow, and they can get plugged with stuff, like PTK said.

I'd stop short of compressed air, but me being me, I'd disconnect the hoses at the steering box, pump a little kerosene or ATF through the steering box in both directions with a hand pump or turkey baster.  Bleeding the air after the exercise  may be a challenge.

If a fluid flush doesn't knock it loose, it may need a teardown.
Wait for other comments, I've done exactly one steering box in my life, in 1983 or so.

Sounds like the valving is either crudded up or has failed internally somehow on that side.

As suggested, flush completely.  Maybe a couple of times.

Go around the block to the left ...?  :P

Sorry, I dunno much about Fords.  I've always had Chevy and GMC.  And a lot of those had the Armstrong PS.

But at one time, Fords used to have a little hydraulic cylinder* attached to the tie rod.  Does yours still have that?  If so, the seal might be blown out around the actuating rod, so it works one way but not the other.  But you should be losing fluid in that case  =|

* I actually used one of these from the junkyard one time in one of my contraptions that I built  =D

swag's?

Too much power steering fluid.  Drain it, and things will even out.

So does it have the booster cylinder or not  ???

Anyway, you could just disconnect the PS entirely, and then it will steer equally well either way  =D

I used to have a log truck that never even had PS.  Grossed about 25K with the trailer. ;)
