Computer Problems: Winfixer
« on: January 23, 2006, 05:07:21 PM »
I made the mistake of downloading Winfixer thinking it was a Microsoft program. I have found some sites that claim to remove Winfixer, but I am wary of downloading more unknown software to my computer. Anybody have some advice as how to proceed?    Thanks, Mike.

This actually is a MS program and as good a place to start as any (windows 2000 & XP only.

Symantec has some detailed information here: http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/winfixer.html

Ad-Aware supposedly removes this as well.  See:  http://www.spywareguide.com/product_show.php?id=2263

It's all just a pain in the ass.  I use Microsoft beta for spyware and Norton Anti-virus/firewall and still get crap on my computer.

Hotbar, and other crap still seems to get thru.  Firefox still allows pop ups and IE SP2 wont load 25% of the pictures.  Damn computers......

I don't mean to be argumentative, Lennyjoe, but I run Microsoft Anti-Spy and Norton for viruses and never have had any junk on my computer. None. And I use IE too.

Well, my computer won't pass validation apparently. I do have Adaware, but now when I try to run a scan my computer shutsdown and a message saying that winlogon encountered a fatal error.   Any other ideas?

Make a note of the missing file name when you get the error message about winloggon.  The file is missing or corrupted.

Do a search for that file name. You may find a copy of it in another directory.  If not, try looking in the CAB files, and restore it from CAB.

Have you tried running Ad-Aware in safe mode?

Secondly, have you tried the manual removal technique on Symantec's site, referenced above?
