MEG a book so bad William Shatner could star in it.
« on: April 14, 2010, 02:20:53 PM »
MEG a novel of deep terror by Steve Alten.  I picked this book up at a library book sale some time back and just got around to reading it.  It looked interesting, I'm thinking Jaws except with a 60+ ft shark.  Man this book is so bad...  but I just can't put it down.

Highlights:

The protagonist's wife is a TV reporter and is fooling around with her producer/husband's best friend.  She asks the producer for a shark cage and bait.  You just  know this isn't going to end well.  The protagonist was flying over this shark in a helicopter to put a tracking device on the shark.  The shark jumped out of the water trying to bite them.  The shark then proceeds to attack some surfers.  It kills one surfer and another gets away.  The surfer who escaped then asks a girl for a date right after the attack.  No hint of mourning over the dead surfer from the guy or the girl.

I'm half way done and the odds of this book improving.  The author wrote 3 more books on this subject.  Would it be masochistic of me to read the others? [popcorn]

It doesn't get any better.  Terrible book.  I don't think I read the other two, at least I don't recall.

I picked it up a long time ago and really enjoyed it. Also liked the second one.

I liked Meg, myself - but I'm a bit of a dino freak, and a BIG fan of Discovery's Shark Week, so prehistoric creatures like the Megalodon spark enough interest in me to overlook merely bad writing, which Alten suffers from in spades.

The series gets worse.  WAY worse...

I read that book somewhere around 12 years ago.  I don't remember much about it, except that it wasn't all that great.

Man, this book had a bad ending as well.  I stuck to the end, which was unbelievably bad.
