1 cubic inch V-8
« on: April 27, 2010, 01:00:16 PM »
Here is a guy who wanted to build a very small scale, yet running, V-8 engine.  Amazing.

That's a quarter beside it:

A plan is just a list of things that doesn't happen.

Gas guzzler!

He should have made a miniature four-cylinder instead  :P

Yeah, but I bet it won't take a supercharger.

I would hope his next project is a Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp.   =)

This one, home-built, blew my mind.  Looks like the pushrods are like fine sewing needles. Supposedly, it runs.

Captured off a craftsman's site, but can't give pic credit.  Sorry.

I'd like to see a V-5. :D

The detail on that is incredible.

I spent enough years machining the full size parts that I can't imagine what it was like to make those.

I can't even deduct points for it having the wrong rear main seal and crank flange. =)

Love that tiny Ferrari.  I was amazed that he got the tach to work!

I'm actually surprised that it runs at all naturally aspirated, considering how small the valves are. (remember, when you cut a diameter in half, you cut the flow rate by 3/4).

The 1:3 scale Ferrari is absolutely mind boggling.  I've seen that video before, and I love that the entire car works.  He taught himself glass blowing to make the bulbs.  Watchmaking to make the gauges.  If I recall, the only thing he didn't make or machine himself was the transmission, as the gears were too complex for his skill level and equipment.  I really love that he worked to tune the exhaust to generate the "Ferrari music".

I would expect it to go the other way, as another consequence of the square-cube law.   Making everything half-size gives you 1/22 the flow rate, as you say, but the cylinder volume would be 1/23, so the smaller you get, the easier I would expect aspiration to be.

Or I'm smoking crack again.
