Moving?
« on: May 06, 2010, 12:19:01 PM »
Just learned a secret today....
Home Depot carries moving supplies.  Boxes, tape, etc.  Not as much stuff as they have at the Uhaul stores....but the prices were a whole lot cheaper.  Large boxes were 1/4 the price of Uhaul.  Bubble wrap was $5 cheaper for a big roll.
Just FYI...

Just remember that once you have emptied out the cardboard boxes they make great target backers.

You are going to need target backers after you unpack, aren't you?

Speaking of packing/moving - have you considered selling your current ammo locally and purchasing replacement at the other end?  That stuff does weigh quite a bit.

stay safe.

this makes box backing MUCH more useful fun, use a staple gun to attach target works good to. [popcorn]

edit: i haven't ordered from the seller, just a handy link.

JamisJockey, we now have dozens and dozens of Home Depot boxes and miles of bubble wrap. It's all yours if you want to pick it up. ;)

You can also sell moving boxes.  Break them back down to a stack, put an ad in Craigslist for half what you paid for them.  Someone, somewhere, will be needing them.  Better yet, call a local real estate brokerage and let them know how many and how much.

When I moved I just went to a local 24-hour Walmart around 3am when they are doing stock and asked one of the assistant managers if I could have some of their boxes before they compacted them.

and there's always the liquor store, although i have heard rumors of them starting to sell them instead of giving them away.

Most of the boxes we got were free, actually from chick fil a.  Friend's teenagers work there and got us a fat stack.

Last time we moved and I checked the local big box store, they had torn the boxes up while extracating the contents.  People were very slash happy with the box cutters....

I usually grab boxes by the dozen from the liquor store.  Especially for canned goods and books.

But I needed medium and large boxes for items that won't fit in those smaller ones.

I don't have so much ammo that I need to sell it before moving it.  Fits in a couple ammo cans easily.  Actually realized my stock is low the other day and intend to fix that after the move.

Monkeyleg, you're funny.

Yup - we used Craigslist to dispose of packing materials, and some stuff that had us looking at each other and asking, "Why did this get moved?".  We asked for a few bucks at first, and as we got further down in supplies we just said, "Come and pick it up, first come first served."  Didn't take long to dispose of it, and we probably could have gotten rid of it almost as fast and gotten more money out of it - but we just didn't care at that point.

Also used CL to dispose of some of our old furniture prior to the move, and to acquire a small table-and-chairs set for our eat-in kitchen at the old place on the advice of our stager consultant, which made the move to our current home.  That's a handy site.

Yeah we've got a small table and some office chairs on CL right now.  Got our patio furniture sold two weeks ago as well.

Excellent thread, JJ !

I move a lot, and I picked up many tips here.  I especially like the idea of selling the used boxes and then rebuying at Home Depot.  I always keep all my boxes, and they take up gobs of space in the garage.  I'll have to compare Home Depot's availability of various sizes.  U-Haul sells many specialty boxes that I doubt I'll find in HD.

They didnt' have much in the way of speicalty stuff.  Small, medium, large and wardrobe boxes.  But for an entire household you could probably save fifty bucks by buying that stuff at HD over Uhaul.

Around here, any furniture or large object we want to be rid of is gone in about 5 minutes if you just tape a piece of paper to it that says:

¡Libre!

I'd have to think that in NOVA or TX, it would be more like 5 seconds.

The most amazing thing I saw was when we got rid of a BIG table, and 6 little Latino kids, none of them older than eight, picked it up, and marched it down the street like a cartoon where ants carry off a picnic basket or whatnot.
I promise not to duck.

I like Rubbermaid tubs for storage and moving. They are more expensive than carboard, but they hold more and are mostly weather proof.  And they stack very easily and don't come with pre-installed roaches, ants, or other nasties.

We probably have two dozen of those that we use for storing winter clothes and seasonal stuff.  I also use them for storing stuff like the curtains off my boat, fishng and camping gear, etc.

Periodically, Costco sells a big box of various moving boxes and packing supplies all in one package for a good price.  It is a good start, and then you can fill in whatever else you may need from the other places.
