Not to be a downer, but I can't help but think 100 years ago, someone with that kind of mind may have spent time tinkering with metals and lathes in a workshop and might have become the next JMB.  It's a shame that the law has virtually killed the ability of talented individuals to come up with revolutionary firearms designs.  I don't think America will ever see another John Moses Browning, Samuel Colt, or Eugene Stoner.  Their kind of inventing is essentially illegal.

As long as you're not making NFA items you can tinker and build all you want. You can't sell the items as a business without the proper FFL though, heck you can even make the NFA stuff with a more expensive license.

I just don't think it occurs to people anymore, firearms have been demonized for so long that it's pretty well sunk into most.
