Yelled at about chick flicks
« on: June 23, 2010, 11:11:03 PM »
So Ms. MillCreek was talking about watching a chick flick while I was doing some homework.

I told her they were all alike.

She asked how?

I said they all featured middle-aged women, trapped in stale and loveless relationships, who find their redemption in the power of sisterhood.

She said there was more to it than that.

I still think I am right.

well, isn't "sisterhood of the traveling pants" about younger women?

No, there's one other kind, where the female protagonist is the bride, bridesmaid, or wedding planner/best friend of the bride or groom who is Mr. or Mrs. "wrong"...

If you've only seen that flavor of chick flick, count your blessings.  There is a whole other genre, called the romantic comedy.  Of course, those are pretty much alike.  And the dancing flicks (Step Up, etc).  Those are all the same.  And the cheer-leading flicks.  Those are all pretty cheer-similar.  Then there are the musicals.

Of course, action flicks are pretty formulaic.  So are horror movies, or so I'm told.

Then there are the musicals.
I don't know about that, a few are actually watchable - for example, Paint Your Wagon and The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.

But a lot of women don't like these for some reason - go figure.  ???

A while back, a buddy of mine was down in the dumps because his wife had borrowed a number of "chick flick" video tapes for "them" to watch. When he mentioned that they weren't exactly his favorites, she told him "OK, YOU get something YOU like and we'll watch THAT!"

So I gave him We Were Soldiers and Blackhawk Down.   =D

The BEST movies are ones that the advertising and previews lead you to believe are chick flics but turn out to be witty dark comedies.

"Home Fries" is such a beast.

I was very unhappy to be spending free time away from my precious Internet, but when two brothers who are a Reservist/Guard Cobra gunship crew chase down their philandering step-father and "kill" him by opening up with the rotary canon loaded with blanks to give him a heart attack, I began to suspect the movie would not be what Mrs. Dual was expecting...

Chick flicks are to females what mindless popcorn movies are to males, for the most part. Designed to appeal to them on a certain level, even if they lack good writing, acting, directing, et cetera.

I like some really stupid movies because they at least feature things being blown up with really big guns and bombs, and hot women.

Some women like really stupid movies because they at least feature nice, yet hunky+funny+responsible+cantotallydancesowellOMG leading men, and girly friendship stuff.

I like "Thelma and Louise", although my wife can't understand why. I guess the two characters could just as easily be guys and the story wouldn't change all that much.

List of other Mancard-friendly musicals:

The Blues Brothers
Some might say, "That's not a musical!"  There is singing.  There is dancing.  So stop chattering before I glue your sack to the accelerator and have Carrie Fisher light your *expletive deleted*ss up with a rocket launcher.  Besides, the Catholic Church placed it on its listed of recommended films with Catholic themes.  I 'm not making that up.

The King and I
Yul Brenner is an arrogant, male chauvinist who doesn't wear shoes.  Good stuff.

Sweeney Todd
Bloody mayhem with a straight razor.  'Nuff said.

The Sound of Music
The main protagonist is an ex-Austrian Navy officer widower who wons a castle.  He hates Nazis and refuses to serve them when they take over.  He escapes with his family to the USA with the sexy ex-Nun nanny his children adore and he loves up.

This is Spinal Tap
"This musical goes to eleven."  Two words:  Exploding Drummers.

List (by no means exhaustive) of Mancard-shredding musicals:

Oklahoma

South Pacific

Mama Mia

OT, but my mother was on a European/U.K. vacation while pregnant with my little sister in 1980. One of the highlights of the trip was seeing Sweeny Todd in the West End of London.

She gagged through the whole thing.

I promise not to duck.

Ms. MillCreek 2.0 persuaded me to go see Mama Mia when the touring company hit Seattle.  The estrogen wafting through the audience was so thick you could have cut it with a knife.
