PerfectSpeed PC Optimizer
« on: August 21, 2010, 12:41:51 PM »
Has anyone used this, or have an opinion on it?  CNet seems to like it, for whatever that is worth.

A couple of days ago, Dad told me his computer was slow, and he was having some kind of problem using the internet (accessing his bank's web site, I think).  When I went to see him yesterday, I found PerfectSpeed PC Optimizer on his desktop, and he said that it had sped things up, and fixed whatever problem he had.  When I ran CCleaner (which I usually do whenever I come over) it found almost no junk files to clean up, but several registry issues to clear up.  So all I know is that PSPCO seems to have cleaned up some junk files and possibly de-fragged his drive.  Other than that, I don't know what to think about it.

I keep hearing radio commercials for a website called "speed up my PC". Sounds like it does nothing more than scan for spyware and defrag your disk.. after you pay the fee. Might as well do it yourself for free.
The testimonials crack me up, makes it sound like their software will increase your memory and hdd size. "My 10 yearold PC can now play the newest games at the highest settings after running Speed up my PC".  ;/

I've heard those, too.  That appears to be a different product.  Comical, yes.  I didn't ask if he paid for it.  I sincerely hope not.

reviews seem good. i've been using smart defrag for awhile now. it's better than winxp's built-in defrag, but really what's that saying?

I use O & O defrag and it works like a charm as for speeding up my HD, the only file that is still fragmented at all is $MSFT.

I finally gave defraggler a try per Fistful's recommendation.  That's a pretty slick program.  I like how effective it is, and it provides an excellent graphic representation of its progress, too.

Generally any program that has the words "speed" or "optimizer" in its name especially when put together in some sort of catchy way sets of radiation alarm like warnings in my brain. "Turbo" is another one.

Advanced System Care Free

Lots of good juju in there. Removes Spyware, checks and fixes the registry, gets rid of internet history, cleans files, tweaks system settings, defrags disk (not sure how in depth this does, given it's pretty fast), among other things.

Download for dad, show him the button to push, and it'll do it's thing. And it's thing it does well. Paid version I haven't tried but I understand it does things more in depth and allows more customization in the setting tweaks.

+1 to ASCFree....it really sped up my old Inspiron 1000...and it's done well for my more modern machines, too...I may end up getting the pay version as a result...

Is there a limit to how many clean-up/speed-up/antispyware/etc programs should be installed or used on one-computer?  There must be close to 20 recommended programs from the APS gurus for improving PC performance. Shirley, they must interfere with each other or at least be redundant. Maybe having several of those programs running in the background will even reduce PC performance.

For speed up programs, find one you like and stick with it. Run it periodically and turn off any on all the time feature. A good one will change the settings and leave it at that. ASCfree does have a nifty ram feature that is OK to leave up, IMO.

As to them all running in the background slowing the computer, this is true. It's good to have multiple anti-virus and anti-spyware programs on the computer, but having them all with running protection will seriously slow things down. I keep one open anti-virus with the real time protection and all the others, including dedicated spyware programs, are closed and run as needed to clean up anything the main one misses.

Does anyone have a link to the "real" ASC FREE download?  I've heard of people getting burned by downloading freeware from spoofed sites.  When I google it, here's what I get:

Second the vote for CNet.  They're okay.  But getting it from the original source is preferred, because you will get the latest version that way.
