Picked up a horse trailer today!
« on: August 26, 2010, 12:11:45 AM »
I figured that since we are getting a horse to have in Montana, we might as well pick up a trailer to go with it.  We already have the saddle, bought grooming supplies and I hand tied a side pull halter and reins.

Only problem is, we don't have the horse yet, and probably won't until after we get back from yet another trip to Northern NY to help settle family affairs.  Lady Shooter is sounding like she wants to have Red after we get him so I may have to find a paint or pinto for me.  Oh well, you just have to roll with the waves and swells.

When you go to NY, bring the trailer.  Then swing into CT.  We have four Morgans for sale.

Give the horse plenty of rest periods on the way back.  I found out (when I was being horsey) that they can get real tired from having to keep balanced through turns and even minor bounces/irregularities on the highway.  Like standing on a subway train for hours on end.  I found that out when I was being New Yorkey.

Though this isn't too much of a problem nowadays with our laundered exhaust systems, watch that the exhaust isn't getting to them.

Two thousand miles is a lot of trailering.

Don't know why I feel the need to mention this, but it's just something I learned.

When I was being horsey.

Had my fill of horses thirty years ago.

WHATEVER YOUR DEFINITION OF "INFRINGE " IS, YOU SHOULDN'T BE DOING IT.

I think a Morgan would be a little large for me and the trailer.  The paint I would love to have is http://www.horseclicks.com/horses/821brw/ this one.  I haven't looked yet to see what transport would cost, but any horse that would do that would probably let an old man sit around on her. ;/

That paint is a gorgeous horse!  I sure do miss having horses.

Picked up a horse trailer today!

Why go to the trouble of picking it up when it's so much easier to tow with your truck.

badum-bump!

Thank you! Thank you!  I'll be here all week.  Try the veal, it's delicious.

I like horses, but in the "grandparent" sense. In that I get to come in, have fun, share affection, and then leave=D I'm honest enough with myself that even if I did have the money/land to have a horse, I could just not commit to one full-time.

The horse/human bond is special, like that of cats and dogs, but different at the same time. I take it as a personal challenge to get the horse to like me when I am around them.
I promise not to duck.

Horses are more like cats than they are like dogs.

They seem to be a bit closer to the wild still, and require more trust to be established.

Not to mention horses are a prey animal instead of a predator, so they have a whole different attitude: run first, ask questions later.  :O

We have a 4 yo colt that is Mr. Personality.  He stands beside the fence so that you can climb onto him bareback.  =)
