New bike accessories
« on: September 15, 2010, 04:53:07 PM »
Grabbed a set of $11 barends off Amazon for the 7100, and decided to go ahead and get an Airzound to get the free shipping.  Tried it out on a near-right-hook today, and it definitely gets people's attention, even when they're too clueless to notice the bright orange jersey.  I'll probably get to test it on some dogs tonight.

Not sure if the barends will be enough for really long rides; I'd still like more hand positions, but changing to trekking bars would mean having to find some SRAM 1:1 compatible shifters (3spd front, 7spd rear) that will work on them, and rearranging all the other crap on the bars (headlight, backup/high-beam headlight, (taclight in a mount) computer, and now Airzound) to get them to work.  If anybody's got a spare set of bars or shifters laying around, let me know; if I can do it cheaper than the new prices, I might be more inclined to give it a shot.

Post a picture of your setup.  You might be able to install some clip on aero bars.
Maybe something like the cane creek bars

Tough part is with mountain bikes you're in a more upright position.  Having a lower position on the bars might not be comfortable.  But, on long rides, if its at all comfortable, being more aero and being able to flatten your body out will make you faster.

Aeros on risers could be a bit odd.  I'll try to get a pic at some point.

My thought is that, between the adjustable stem and the various possible arrangements of trekking bars, I should be able to get one position similar to what I've got, and at least one somewhat farther forward.  Add in the outside position, and that should keep hand/arm fatigue to a minimum.

Here we go:

Captain Dashboard dislikes the risers' waste of space in the not-even-close-to-the-right-angle-for-mounting-stuff sections.

Overall front view, outfitted for commuting and small shopping runs:

Side view:

Oddly, I'd never noticed before that it matches my Blazer almost perfectly.  The yellow stripes on the cranks are Scotchlite, as are the red/yellow (rear) and white/yellow (front) bits on the rims.  The yellow things on the seatpost and stem are retroreflective snap bracelets; I usually wear one on my left arm at night for signalling, and they also come in handy for binding up a pants leg if I'm riding in pants.

For daytime rides, I've given up on freezing the water bottles and just use a Camelbak with the gel-equipped bladder.  I tend to drink enough on hot days that reaching for a bottle each time is a hassle anyway.

And just for giggles, my Scotchlite job on the helmet:

If I'm not wearing a Class 3 reflector vest, there's usually one in the pannier, but the helmet is a nice addition in case I don't notice it getting dark.

Nice bike! I like the use of reflective tape. It's a good idea.

We use the bar ends on our mountain bikes. We do mostly city riding and they do help a lot.

I share your handlebar pain; the new bike I got for my girlfriend has similar handlebars which make mounting even a headlight difficult.

Oh.  Yeah.  I don't like risers either for the same reason.  Bar ends seem a little awkward on riser bars for some reason. Of course, my mtb is mostly used offroad, so I like to get low and use a lowered stem and a flat bar.
With all your accessories, have you looked at these?

I've thought about that to get the lights out a little farther past all the cables, and/or some of the fork mounts to put at least one light well below the bars.  Another possibility is a MagicShine or similar on one of the old head tube mounts where it won't rotate with the bars, and a smaller light on the bars or a AA powered helmet light to look around outside the big light's area with.

I doubt the stem will adjust enough to get those where I'd want them; I tried it with a set of flat bars and just couldn't get them high enough.  I think trekking bars at an angle to the rear, with the stem lowered all the way will put the back position close to where I am now.

I have Mary bars on my singlespeed.  They are not useful for mounting accessories.

No rifle mount?

Back in the early 90s, a bike company called Reflex made a bike specifically for bowhunting.  The bike came equipped with a bow rack and was painted camo.  I've only seen one in person though.

we don't need no stinking rifle rack, go with a rifle that can be broken down and it should fits in the panniers along with the ammo. out of sight out of the pawnshop. [tinfoil] think marlin lever, or an ar-15. a paintball handgun mount for each side of the handlebars could be a lot of fun though.

I saw a link floating around teh intertubes for a bracket that mounts to the seatpost that can be used to mount a game cart.
Here's another yoohoo using a game cart.

Wireless is the shizzle.  My only complaint is sometimes the magnet thingies they use to sense vehicles at stoplights will send my wireless into fits.  Reviewing ride data to see my max speed was 98mph.... ???
