Garment or upholstery
« on: September 21, 2010, 12:16:11 AM »
Further to this thread, I have 2 hides that I'd had tanned into leather that it looks like I won't likely be able to add to with any realistic hope color matching.  However, I'd need 3 more deer hides, OR 1 more elk hide to have enough for the jacket I wanted to have made. So I need to figure out what to do with them.

My original intent was to get a jacket made.  I have one each deer and elk hides.  Both were dyed "chocolate" in color.  The shade is too different between them, nevermind the differences in thickness, grain, and feel to combine them into one project.

So what I'm looking for is suggestions on what to do with that leather (bear in mind that I am an evangelical Christian, so S&M or GLBT themed suggestions will not be appreciated).  SWMBO thought getting a chair upholstered with the leather would work well.  I'm not sure if there's enough for that, but I'd be interested in learning more about the option.  There are some garment options, but SWMBO doesn't like the idea of a vest, given that I rarely if ever wear them.  Not sure what else I'd have sufficient material for that would be worth having made.

Thanks.
FTR the the elk hide was measured by the tannery at 23 sq ft, and the deer hide at 10 sq ft.

Purse, backpack, or period correct muzzleloader gear if you like charcoal burning guns.

I'm so contrarian that I didn't respond to the thread.

Bible covers, or custom-bound Bibles?  Maybe a family set.  Use the rest for holsters and mag pouches.

That's a pretty good idea.  I'll have to look into who can do that kind of thing.  Might be a good use for the deer hide anyway.

Deer makes great shooting or driving gloves. You could get several pair out of a nice hide.

If I still had my woodworking tools, I'd be very tempted to try making the Cigar Chair from the New Yankee Workshop.  Hard to tell though, without buying the plans, if the 23 sq ft elk hide would be big enough.  At least there was only each entrance and exit wounds.  I suspect that I'd be short on leather though.

On the deer hide one of the two bullets fragmented and (possibly along with some bone fragments) left 4 holes in the hide.  Plus something must have damaged the hide (either my knife while skinning or a rock/branch while dragging) as there's a good size hole right in the middle of the back.

if'in it's a chair you want, remember you can swap the back and sides out for naugahyde. or go with a design that leaves them in wood.

for Bibles, this place does custom bindings. haven't had the need to use them, but there site looks pretty good. [tinfoil] i ended up buying presentation grade Cambridge concords for what i needed, just hope i can find two more in 2 and 6 years.

Maybe even combine the two and have a Bible cover that accomodates a CCW piece or a knife....

It is much more powerful to seek Truth for one's self.  Seeing and hearing that others seem to have found it can be a motivation.  With me, I was drawn because of much error and bad judgment on my part. Confronting one's own errors and bad judgment is a very life altering situation.  Confronting the errors and bad judgment of others is usually hypocrisy.
