Keeping critters out of raised beds?
« on: October 13, 2010, 05:12:12 PM »
Tore out the remnants of my garden last week.  Just a parsley plant lingering on in one corner until it freezes completely.  Might be a while as it is quite sheltered up against a brick wall.

Suddenly I've got a problem.  The dog has taken in one of the beds.  Something is digging up a couple corners of two more.

I have three 6x4 10" high beds.  Two of them are gridded over with cord for square foot gardening.  Am planning on covering them with straw
after Halloween, when I may be able to get it cheaper as the places selling it for decorations clear it out.  However, I had problems with critters digging it up and cats--including mine--excreting in them before they were planted, even with a straw
cover.  One of them I never planted
at all, but let the weeds grow, and that kept the animals out.

So, what do I do over the winter to keep the dirt in the beds, not on the lawn, and to keep animal detritus out?  Whatever I do, it ought to look halfway decent, as we hope to move out soon, and the place will have to be sold.

A plan is just a list of things that doesn't happen.

Chicken wire on wooden stakes s few inches above the ground. Easily installed and removed and animals will not want want to walk on it or dig in it.
I might not last very long or be very effective but I'll be a real pain in the ass for a minute!

Clearly the cheapest option, and would keep the dog out, but unless I'm misunderstanding you, I don't see how that would work for the cats.

Mothballs are probably out--kids play back there.  But, I'm pretty sure I saw a mouse run into the house today while I was doing some cleanup on the back porch.  If mothballs would discourage mice from taking upresidence in the gardens it might be worth it to figure out some way to use them safely.

Otherwise, I think I'll go with Herohog's chicken wire suggestion.  Should be pretty cheap.

We just cover ours in black plastic for the winter.  That'd keep the cat excrement out I suppose.  Add the chicken wire on top and it should stop any critters from digging around too.
