Shooting Apps for iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad
« on: October 26, 2010, 11:31:20 PM »
All of these apps are available at iTunes App Store, AFAIK.  Some are rewritten to take advantage of iPad’s bigger screen.  The first two apps are amazing when you go to the vendor web sites and look at the screens.  I haven’t tried any of these programs, so I’m not endorsing them.  I’m just happy they’re available.

Can your phone do this ?

Don't know about all of the apps you found for your iPad, etc, but I went looking for a ballistics app for my Blackberry and found a bunch of them. I even downloaded one, although I doubt I'll have the time to play with it. The only range I know of around here is 100 yard, so that doesn't give me an opportunity to do any real testing even if I did have time.

That's good to hear.  There was a similar thread over on The Firing Line about six months ago, and we only found one shooting app for Android phones, although I suppose there must be many more by now.

I hadn't heard of any for the Blackberry, but then I haven't been looking, either.  It's all good because that means there's a demand for them.

I don't have any of those mobile devices, but I downloaded a couple of the Touch apps because I was afraid the apps might get yanked out of the Store before I got around to getting a device to play them on.  Now it looks like I'll be getting a Touch within a month, and I can try the apps out along with a new rifle I recently acquired that has the capability of reaching out far enough to use them.

I have Ballistic, Right 2 Bear, and Gun Laws. I had the Surefire shot timer but deleted it since I have a dedicated timer.

Ballistic has more options than I will ever use, or learn to use. The gun law apps are handy when travelling.

I just did a quick keyword search on the Android market via my phone, so I may have missed some, but it looks like there are still only a few out there. I have Shooter by Sean Kennedy, which is really comprehensive. $9.99 though.

Well, if nothing else, installing this app now has me itching to go and shoot my .308 just to have numbers to plug into the fields. ;)

I actually found quite a few ballistic and trajectory apps, but this one was free. It's a .xls file. Don't know yet if there's more bells and whistles.

It's all relative, these prices are so ridiculously cheap for software.  I might get most of each and then try them out to see what fits.

Funny about $14.99 for Clay Tracker.  Somebody has identified the one segment of the shooting community with lotsa discretionary income, judging by the prices of their shotguns.

You're right of course, it's chump change. I guess it's perspective given that there are so many free apps out there. But $9.99 is way more than worth it for the Shooter app. That's funny about Clay Tracker -- and probably accurate.

Here's an interesting discussion, fairly technical, by some shooters waaaay more experienced than me.

http://www.snipershide.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=982389

It's from nearly two years ago, and one would hope that all the programs have improved since.

Ballistic is popular with this crowd, but one guy was having some difficulties until he adjusted atmospheric pressure and humidity parameters. I had no idea those aspects were so critical, but these guys are shooting out to 1000 yards.

Interesting web site.  I added it to my favorites.

Not totally related to the thread at hand but I remember a thread on THR a while back where the OP had an issue with his handloads hitting 1" high for every degree in temp above 72 or something like that.  I was pretty blown away that the guy had logged enough data to nail it down to that variable.
