We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother

Thank you all for your service.  Happy Veteran's day.

Blah.  Went to a vet's day thing at a school this morning.  Smiled and whatnot for the kids, but I'd normally rather chew glass than attend such things.  But when you make a promise...  Now to the company vet's day thing, and dinner tonight.  I do get the appreciation thing and appreciate the appreciation thing.  But I personally am not very comfy with it.  Sorta like when people paid for my meal back when I was active.  Now if people were handing me ammo, that'd be a different story...

The downside to either of those free offers, is that they are applebees and golden corral

And that EVERY veteran in town is going to be there.  Not much good in a military town like Colorado Springs.

I drove all the way to the post office on my lunch break today only to discover that it was Veteran's day.
Maybe a rare occurence, but then you only have to get murdered once to ruin your whole day.

More appropriate today than St. Crispin's.  Thanks for your service.

Rev, I know what you mean.  My service was Cold War era, so we did a lot of training, guarding, and being ready for the day that,, fortunately, never came...  I almost don't feel worthy of the thanks and such.  My scarifice was nothing compared to the men and women who have truly made sacrifices on the battelfields.

Clinton era myself.  I'm more inclined to stay seated when there are tributes to vets (like at Sea World right before the Shamu show. It was .mil appreciation day, and they had this huge todo, and asked vets to stand up.  Or at the wife's church around Veterans day and Memorial day.)
I personally don't see what I did to be all that special.  But Marines I know and trained are now serving as leaders in theater.  That makes me proud.

I'm kind of with Jamis on this.  I served during the era of the Peanut Farmer President*, and never heard a shot fired in anger.  As time passes I find myself thinking the real vets are those that have "seen the elephant."
Being a peace time Marine, I was more of an also-ran, not deserving of the same accolades.

*Edited to correct:  I actually enlisted just few months before Nixon resigned, and served while Ford was President.  (I actually got to shake his hand at Hickam AFB one afternoon.)  The Peanut Farmer was President during the last year of my enlistment and during my time in the reserves.

If there really was intelligent life on other planets, we'd be sending them foreign aid.

Conservatives see George Orwell's "1984" as a cautionary tale.  Progressives view it as a "how to" manual.

My wife often says to me, "You are evil and must be destroyed." She may be right.

Liberals believe one should never let reason, logic and facts get in the way of a good emotional argument.

I volunteered RIGHT after the draft was ended and as we were JUST pulling out of Nam. and mustered out with an Honorable Medical discharge after 3 years of active duty and 6 months active reserve.

I got my free Appleby's 7oz steak and had the rest and of my meal (Virgin Pina Coloda and a sweet tea) and my wife's meal paid for by a dear friend we haven't seen in years who wanted to take me out and because mine was free he paid for the drinks and my wife's food instead.
