If you buy mulch, read this warning!!!

It seems that many of the tens of thousands of trees damaged or destroyed by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita have been converted to mulch as part of the cleanup process.  Now, Louisiana has thousands upon thousands of tons of mulch, which are being offered for sale at ridiculously low prices to suppliers all over the country in an attempt to get rid of the stuff.

Unfortunately, trees from the New Orleans and neighboring areas are vulnerable to Formosan termite infestation.  This is one of the most dangerous termites out there, and there are no known insecticide treatments to prevent it from spreading - the only treatment is to burn the infected wood.  There is a serious risk of infected mulch showing up at major garden suppliers countrywide, and passing on this infestation to previously unaffected parts of the USA.

For more information, see http://www.agctr.lsu.edu/termites/ and read some of the many articles referenced there.

Na, call in Ripley.

Ewwwww!  I routinely spray the stuff I get from the county with Ortho-chlor (PC clordane replacement), but you're suggesting that won't work on the LA bugs.  Not really a problem, as I'll stay with local source, but a good heads-up, thx.

I don't need to buy mulch-California's government manufactures it, and we all have more than we can use.

The cities in the area here have free mulch from city trees that are storm damaged or removed.  The bulk oak mulch you buy at the local landscape companies comes from furnature scraps from factories in missouri. Not sure about the bagged stuff from the bix box stores.

I usually get the free stuff from the city pile.

Seek out wisdom in books, rare manuscripts, and cryptic poems if you will, but seek it also in simple stones and fragile herbs and in the cries of wild birds. Listen to the song of the wind and the roar of water if you would discover magic, for it is here that the old secrets are still preserved.
