Couple of PC questions
« on: November 23, 2010, 01:03:53 AM »

What is the difference between DDR2 and DDR3 RAM?

Anyone familiar with the ATI Radeon graphics cards?  particularly the HD 5450.  Opinions?  Good? Bad?  Are there better offerings in the price range?

Thanks.

DDR 3 is the newer generation compared to DDR 2. It will generally be faster. They are not cross compatible.

As to the ATI card I've only used Nvidia cards so no clue.

5450 is decent, if dated. Which game do you want to play with it.

keep in mind, a 5750 is not much more expensive, and is much better.

Ditto on the ram thing above.

ATI cards are teh awesome.

I've got a pair of 3870 cards in Crossfire configuration.  I'm only just now considering an upgrade to a 5xxx series card.

However:

Whatever card you get, make sure the 3rd digit (5xxx) is at least 7 or higher.  The stuff below 7 is largely designed for desktop grade work with handicapped graphics processors and slower/less memory.

The x700/x800/x900 series cards are for the gamers and graphics people.

Thanks to everyone for replying.

I'm finally going to replace my 10 year old Dell Inspiron as it is slow as molasses in January.  Dell has a desktop for $699 that includes 4 GB of DDR3, a 750-GB hard drive and the aforementioned ATI 5450.  I'd like to have 8GB RAM, 1TB disk and a better graphics.  Uses would include the usual Internet access, editing video files (MP4 mostly), home bookkeeping/taxes, and some gaming. I've been thinking about picking up Red Dead Redemption, but there's no way it will run on my current system.  Nor will Gun or Battlefield 1942.

If anyone has suggestions re system configuration or brands, I'm all ears.

I just bought a gateway system that was awesome for a grand.

it's the FX6840-15e

I have been very happy with it so far. I have been playing star trek online with it, which has very nice visuals, with no issues.

I love this PC.
