HELP! Marlin 1894
« on: December 15, 2010, 01:04:40 PM »
##$%!  *#$$%!! &%$$#!!!!! dammit all to hell!!!!

Just got back from the range, where, while shooting my 1894, the lever just stuck itself in the open position. Can't budge it. I had just shot the first ten rounds of the day through just fine, lever worked smooth as can be. Then I loaded another ten, racked the lever, and bam! Stuck open. One round was loose just ahead of the extractor, and I was able to remove it, but I have nine stuck in the magazine.

This rifle has been flawless for as long as I've owned it. Anyone got any ideas on this that I can try without resorting to the gunsmith? At this point I'm going to have to let it sit till the weekend, but if anyone has any ideas, I'll give them a go.

I had that happen to me at the range once.  Removed the screw holding the lever in and got it up and running in no time.  Not sure what I did, exactly, but it was pretty easy to sort out.

Of course I couldn't leave it alone until the weekend. I just pulled the lever, which unjammed it and let me get all of the rounds out except for one. The thingamajig riser thing that I think sets a cartridge up to raise into the chamber popped itself up after the bolt came out, and now somehow there's a round caught between that and the bottom of the receiver.

Argh. Must. have. patience. and. leave. alone. until. I. have. a. proper. work. area. available.

Also I should add, does not appear to have been the "Marlin jam" as it didn't look like a double load attempt. Also the loading gate screw was tight.

I've found these folks to be pretty helpful. http://www.marlinowners.com/forums/index.php

I bought a Puma 92 in 44 mag last year.  I loaded a few rounds and fired once.  When I tried to open it, it jammed and I couldn't get the action opened up far enough even to eject the empty case.  I popped the tube mag and took all rounds out.  After a few minutes of working the movement, I got it open enough to get the fired case out, but it still wouldn't open up all the way.  I sent it into the service center.  When I got it back, the tag just said they replaced some part in the action.  The hand writing was not very legible so I don't know what part.  It has worked like a champ since then.  I was actually looking at selling it because I have bought a Marlin 1894 since then.

Well, disaster averted. I of course couldn't leave it alone, so I pretty much disassembled the whole darn thing, got the cartridge unstuck from under the carrier, and have everything back together. It's cycling fine working the lever with no ammo loaded. Before I shoot it again I'm gonna make some dummy rounds and cycle them through a whole bunch to see if I can repeat the problem.

Now of course I have to remote in to work for three hours tonight to make up for the work time I blew off getting diverted by this. Oh well.

You have been a victim of the dreaded "Marlin Jam".
Balog provided a link to the Marlin Owners forum. Do a search there for Marlin Jam.
It took  new carrier to fix mine. Not an expensive fix and it is easy to install.

I thought "Marlin jam" is when a second cartridge works its way in during a load cycle?

Was your new carrier a Marlin replacement part or third party?

Not sure if it's the same thing but I've had mine try to feed two rounds when the OAL was too short.  Had to take the mag spring out to get the rounds out of the tube.

I had both my Marlin 39 and a neighbor's Win 9422 jam within five minutes of each other  ;/

I don't remember what I did to fix them now, but it must have been a cleaning/lubrication issue.

I got it from Brownells, I think it was OEM.

And thanks from me, too, RKL.

This thread reminded me that I have a Marlin in .357 stuffed in the back of the dafe that I don't use because of it being cantankerous to get a shell seated in the chamber.

The carrier doesn't present the shell's axis in a collinear fashion to the chamber's axis; the shell scrapes hard against one side, so I have to work the action gingerly and multiple times to goose each cartridge in.

Anywho, I just place an order for a new carrier at Brownell's; hope it comes out of backorder soon.
