Looking for cheap hard drives...
« on: January 22, 2011, 05:07:13 PM »
Looking for a pair of IDE drives, preferably new old stock, cheap. Small is okay, because they're going in a Windoze 98se box that is running some legacy software. I'm planning on setting up either a software or a hardware RAID on it, because the owner of the system's idea of a "backup" is "reverse gear."

Sometimes we carry more weight then we owe.
And sometimes goes on and on and on.

Kewl - I'd checked Tiger Direct and Newegg first, but looks like the drives from Microcenter will work out... Now to figure out a cheapo/freeware backup solution... RAID is going to be problematic with the Win98se system (it'd have to be card-based), so I'm going to try to find some backup software that'll let me copy the whole damn drive - any ideas?

Would a SIDERaid card help you any?

I think I still have one or two of them around here.

I'm thinking that RAID is going to be more of a PITA than anything - the computer doesn't get updated - it just runs some legacy software. So I'm going to make the hard drive, then mirror it, and the user knows enough to swap the master/slave bit (he wonders where that is for the USB drive I've got on another of his machines for a backup, and "don't worry about it" gets his head twisting...) or just unplug and replug a fresh working drive if #1 goes belly up...

IIRC, Goodsync will run in the free mode limited only by the number of jobs and/or the number of directories or files that you explicitly list.  If that's the case, setting it up to do a one-way sync from the root level of the drive should work.

I have a case of New Seagate 40 gig IDE drives. You pay shipping and $10 a drive and they are yours, up to 6 drives.
I might not last very long or be very effective but I'll be a real pain in the ass for a minute!

Do you have floppy drives on those units?

I think I have some old copies of Ghost around here.

orsum... PM me your paypal addy and how much you want for shipping - I'll take two (we'll use 'em in -something- around here...). I may go with an addonics IDE/CF drive, but I don't know how well the CF cards will last.

I bought a copy of Norton Ghost a few years back, never used it. And have no idea what I did with it.

It'd have to be card-based, as well as offer Win98 drivers.

Which means it'd have to be OLD.

Nothing made in the last 8+ years is going to even offer Win98 drivers.

Drivers?  My old one comes up for config during POST, and appears to whatever OS as a normal IDE controller with one or two drives.  I had 3.11 running on that machine for a while.

Simple good, complicated bad...

I've seen the user in question spray WD-40 into a computer that was making a little more noise than normal. While it was running.

Argh.
