"The Adventures of Tom Sawyer"
« on: January 04, 2011, 01:18:02 AM »
Just finished reading it again after a long hiatus. I used to read it (and others) every couple of years but stopped for quite some time. Not really sure why. Brought back a lot of comparative memories of just being a boy at one time. Treasure hunting, playing pirates, being fascinated with things that went "kaboom", and suddenly realizing some girls had a strange, almost alien appeal. Almost wishing I had a "sure 'nough" Barlow knife again...

Currently reading Huck Finn, and after that it will be "Roughing It". All of them old, dear friends, but timeless in their manner.

I used to like the Penrod and Sam novels by Booth Tarkington.  The Hardy Boys, too, when I was a little older.

Reread Huck Finn a couple years ago.  Interesting in the way science fiction is interesting -- as a glimpse into a different world.

At least with Sam'l Clemens, you could point to an individual person and say, "There, see? He (or she) wrote that.  He (or she) sat down and conceived the plot, fleshed out the characters, scrawled (or typed) it all out, letter by letter, sentence by sentence, and finally typed (or scrawled) 'The End' when finished.

I was devastated in later years to discover that most of the "series" books, for children or otherwise, were written either by a staff of writers or farmed out to ghost writers by the publishing companies --including the "Hardy Boys" series.  (And the Nancy Drew mysteries, too, I found out.)

How hard my childhood icons fall.

.... And not just with my favorite books, either.

For a minute, reading the thread title, I thought this was in reference to that creepy-ass claymation magic elevator ride where Mark Twain takes them to hell to meat Satan etc.

How does Meat Satan differ from regular Satan?

Meat Satan is responsible for a host of evils, such as vienna sausages, all forms of pate, menudo, blood sausage, etc, etc.

Regular Satan just makes people sin.

Vienna sausage RULES!  And so does potted meat.

Tom Sawyer was by far my favorite book as a yout'
For the invisible things of him since the creation of the world are clearly seen, being perceived through the things that are made, even his everlasting power and divinity, that they may be without excuse. Because knowing God, they didn’t glorify him as God, and didn’t give thanks, but became vain in their reasoning, and their senseless heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools.

Vienna Sausages are the mentally deficient younger cousin to hot dogs, and as such, are wholly unnecessary.

As for potted meats, God never intended for meat to be spread like butter. Being contrary to God's will, potted meat is a product of the Meat Satan.

I read somewhere that there's a new edition of Huck Finn coming out only they got rid of all the "N" words and "I" words.   Yep, they've made it PC.

"I" words?
