Lb. for Lb., if you want a damned good dog around children that will bond with them and be a fearless companion, you could do a lot worse than a dachshund.

Just make sure they bond to the kids. When I was a kid the little weiner bonded to its owner, my grandfather. That remains the only dog that ever took a serious bite at me. Later when my grandfather went totally nuts the little nasty dog would sleep with him in bed and get pretty vicious with anyone that came to take care of the guy. There were no sad faces when that dog went to the vet, before its time, for the big shot.

I dunno.  My Brittany is really good with the kids.  She was bought at 9 weeks old, when my kids were ages 1 and 3. She loves them kids something fierce.
Her temperment is such that our neighbors 2 year old has explored every inch of her face and ears, ridden her, and jumped on her with nary a whimper or complaint.  Neighbor jokes that my dog is his boy's first kiss.

I grew up with Brittany mixes, started with a stray that showed up when I was 2, later had her bred to a purebred, even later she bred herself to ???? The whole damn neighborhood by the diverse look of the pups. Excellent tempered dogs all of them, really haven't had any other dogs that happy with life.
