Scanning your own books
« on: February 24, 2011, 10:00:31 AM »
Guys, I am rapturously in love with my iPad as an e-reader.  I have lotsa LOTSA books, mostly paperpack, that I have loved and occasionally re-read.  I can't buy e-copies of stuff like Griffin's The Brotherhood of War, for example.  In some cases, the e-reader version of a book is more expensive than a paperback copy.  Sooooooo....

I'm thinking about disassembling the books, essentially destroying them, in order to scan them into a PDF or some other e-reader format, for my own use.  Since I own (and will destroy) the dead-tree edition, am I courting legal trouble with the copyright laws?  (groan).

I have some experience, decades old, operating a massive paper cutter that would slice off the spine of a paperback book easily.  It would then be a straightfoward process to feed the loose pages thru a fairly heavy-duty scanner.  Well, that's my first plan, anyway.

Opinions?

Seems like every day, I'm forced to add to the list of people who can just kiss my hairy ass.

Not a legal opinion, but I'd consider it on-par with converting a movie that you legally own from VHS to DVD, or ripping an audio CD to MP3 for use on your MP3 player.

Fair use, IMO.  Even without destroying the original book.

Is there a gun-woot, perchance?

IANAL so this is NOT legal advice, but from what I've seen & heard, people only get into trouble when they sell or distribute copied works. I've never heard of someone getting in hot water because they made a backup copy of material they've already purchased for personal use alone.

In a practical sense . . . how would anyone else even know you have it on your iPad, unless you do something foolish like upload it so others can get copies?

Trump won in 2016. Democrats haven't been so offended since Republicans came along and freed their slaves.

Why yes, there happens to be a slightly crappier version:

As long as you own the original (or whats left of it) It would be legal as long as you did not sell the digital version. Same way it is legal to copy or change the format of a movie you own.
I needed a mod to change my signature because the concept of "family friendly" eludes me.
Just noticed that a mod changed my signature. How long ago was that?
