Not the space kind, the floor kind.
I am in the market and need to have some suggestions as to what to get. Requirements as follows:
> Upright
> Preferably bagless
> Extension and attachments
> Durable and effecient
> ~$200 budget

I like Oreck's stuff but don't buy it off the TV, go to the store. I happen to know the TV versions are a cheaper build than the store ones AND the store will not service any that you bought off the TV. Little known facts. Good old honest Dave Oreck doesn't mention this stuff for some reason.
(One of my customers is the local Oreck store so I get all the skinny)

Here's another vote for the Oreck. My wife works for a housecleaning company so we got the real one (not the TV one) and we've had it for five years with no major problems. They're ugly, but extremely functional. Repairs and bag changes are fast and easy. It's also far more powerful than any other upright I've ever owned.
BTW the bagless vacuums aren't anything special.

I dislike the Orecks myself. We may have a bum one, but two trips to the Oreck store (yes we bought from the Oreck store) hasn't helped any.
I don't really have any personal recomendations. However, allergy websites rate the Dyson pretty high. May be out of your price range.

I want a new vacuum too, and my mom just got an Oreck. I wonder if they are strong enough for removing pet hair from the dense wool area rugs. So far, the best thing is a small Dirt Devil, but I don't want to work that hard.

Funny you should ask this...
I read an article on the development of vacuum cleaners in my latest issue of Invention and Technology Magazine.
I have a Dirt Devil. It's OK. The only think I wish it had was a larger dirt cup. With 2 dogs I'm forever emptying it.

An often overlooked place to get vacuums is Overstock.com . We got a Hoover there a couple of years ago. It was delivered to the door, has worked flawlessly, and was gotten at a great price. Although it was sold as factory reconditioned, you could not tell it from new. Much like the blemished PDA I bought there, still haven't found the blem.

This is just an example, try a search there for vacuum.

I'm told the bagless ones have a greater tendency to spew dust back into the air.

SWMBO and I have a Dyson we bought at Target a few months ago. It was in the $250 range IIRC.
Of course, I get a discount as a Target employee.
It works pretty well, and we are happy with it. Bagless, HEPA filter, etc.

We considered a Dyson, but after seeing one work and not being impressed, spent more money and got a Simplicity S38 canister. Electrostatic filering, plus activated charcoal, plus HEPA.
Love the thing. Gets the carpet really clean without putting crap back into the air. Not cheap. Worth every penny I spent on it.
...and it's quiet!

Well, you know what they say, "If a vacuum doesn't suck, it blows!"
Oreck has a little lightweight canister that'll suck a golf ball through a garden hose. it's ~ $235 IIRC

Find a local Kirby store and check out their reconditioned units.
