Not sure how I feel about modernizing it; the original time period would look better on screen IMO.

Or something steampunk-ish.  I agree.  But it has a lower production cost to use a setting of "today" and it also points the finger squarely at Washington for all the bullsquat policies that protect the moocher mentality.

Owning and having read all of her books, I can't imagine spoiling it by going to a movie put together in our time.  How do you condense over 1,000 pages of intense reading?
