What the dork, over? The data plan does not include texting? Is this common for wireless carriers?

It's an evil plot to soak you for more money.  Heck, I've never sent a text and wouldn't know how to even start.  The only text I've ever received has been spam.

I never liked texting, either, but since I now have a big, fancy smart-phone, why not? The keyboard's there, such as it, so I've back-slidden into textism.

Tip: you can send text messages to other people through gmail. I think you can receive them through gmail too. They might have to pay to receive it though, I guess.
Maybe a rare occurence, but then you only have to get murdered once to ruin your whole day.

Maybe you're thinking of Google Voice?  A pretty neat service that I've just barely tapped the potential of.

The only thing I can think of is perhaps with my plan being a government/military plan under Verizon, they just throw in the texts. =|

We have 1400 mins, unlimited text and a data plan.  We never use the data plan though.  We do use the heck out of texting.
Plus, we just added my mom to our plan and got her a texting capable phone.   I will drag her into the 21st century

Texting is a cash cow for the providers anyway; a maximum-size SMS message uses up less bandwidth than a second of audio and is handled in a store-and-forward manner, so it doesn't even need the priority that voice traffic has.

Mine aren't.  I have Verizon and my unlimited text is one of the ala carte services.  I'd bet you're paying a fee in there somewhere for texts.

Same here. My .gov phone is Verizon and texts (250/mo I think) are $5/mo extra.

They'll all screw you if you're not careful. When you set up your plan you have to go through everything with the salesperson, or they won't include it so you end up with a $600 bill when you're not expecting it. Happened when my wife upgraded last time, she also got a new number corresponding with our new locale. Yeah, they didn't set her up with squat on her phone and we got soaked to the tune of over $400.  I was able to bully them into cutting some of the crap off, but it still cost us over double our normal bill.

Ditto. I took my cell phone into a Verizon storefront in a mall and had them disable texting on my account. Why should I pay to receive unwanted advertising from some company I never heard of and will never do business with?

Back in the day when I got my first genuine-two-year-contract-required cellular telephone, as opposed to the Tracphone I had in high school, I bought unlimited data. There was a AOL Messenger feature on the phone, and used the heck out of it for one month talking to friends while I was down at tech school. I quit after getting a bill for about $100, it turns out that AOL was texting, not data. :facepalm:

Fast forward to my current contract with Verizon. 250 text, unlimited data. I don't actually talk or text much but I use Google Talk and Gmail, which do fall under the data plan.

I have a similar plan through Verizon.  1400 "prime time" minutes except for Vz to Vz calls, which are free 24/7.  Nights and weekends are free for non-vz calls.  I also get unlimited Vz to Vz text and multimedia messages and 250 txt/multimedia messages to non-vz phones.  This is a "family plan", so I have three phones on that one plan.  It costs me about $112/month.

We don't have a land line, only using the cell phones for all calls.

After the minutes and data plan on two phones, I really don't see balking at $5 more a month.

It because of paying for minutes and data already that I balk at the extra fee.
