Gettin' off work foot-tappin' music
« on: May 24, 2011, 08:13:38 AM »
Lately, I have been spinning CCR "Looking out my back door" when I get home. That tune is so relaxing.

What does it for y'all?

If we're talking CCR, their cover of "Susie Q" always gets my foot moving up and down.

For CCR, my favorite is, "Who'll Stop the Rain". If you really want to mellow out after work, a glass of whiskey and "Moonlight Sonata". :)

Lately it's been the Stone's "Can't You Hear Me Knocking", Mick Taylor's lead solo here at the 4:40 minute mark.

The solo wasn't part of the original written song. When they got to the studio and played the song, it was supposed to end, but Taylor just kept on playing with his own solo. The rest of the band members picked up their instruments again and joined in. They did a few takes again using his impromptu solo, and then put it to tape.

That was the Stones at their peak, and Taylor was obviously a better guitarist than Richards (which is probably why he wasn't with the band very long).

As for CCR, "Molina" is one of their good but lesser-known songs. "Fortunate Son" is good, despite the anti-war lyrics.

Not necessarily CCR... just wondering.

Word.

I'm halfway through "Exile on Mainstreet" as I type.  "Got to scrape that sh it right off your shoes"
Timeless now as it was 30 years ago, when I first heard it.
Sticky Fingers, Exile, Goat's Head Soup, Only Rock and Roll,
Was Taylor on Get yer Ya Ya's Out?
For four years, they really were the "Greatest Rock and Roll Band".

The jammy Allman Bros Fillmore tapes are always on standby
e.g. In Memory of E. Reed; Mountain Jam; Stormy Monday;
also, I can really get off on some hardcore Pigpen G.D. however I like the dead best with Godchaux on keys = wall of sound era 71-77
7-11 was a part time job.

Oh, yeah. On "Love in Vain" (listen here, you can hear Mick Taylor come in at 1:21.

On "Sympathy for the Devil" (listen here), Taylor's half of the dual-part lead comes in at 4:15.

Keith Richards was no slouch as a guitarist, but Taylor's style is much more fluid, and he has a lot more range in terms of style than Richards. His boyish looks didn't fit with the band's image, though, and he wasn't into the decadent lifestyle to the extent that Richards and Jagger were.

At that time ('69 through '73 or so), Keith Richards was more popular than Mick Jagger, and I've always suspected that Richards regarded Taylor as a threat to his standing. I have nothing to back that up, just a hunch, but it would have been better for the band to have kept Taylor on, rather than getting Ron Wood.

Concrete Blonde is great! I haven't listened for a long while. In fact I probably still have their stuff on CD and need to rip it.

Lately, when I have a CD going on the way home, it has been the Yes album Drama.  The first 3 or 4 tracks are really good with good base guitar parts.

I heard a female singer doing that song about 25 or 30 years ago at a dance hall outside of Houston and never knew until recently who'd recorded it.  (her cover was better than the original, btw)  Glad somebody else here likes good ol' country music -- it's getting hard to find these days other than oldies.
