An "oh-oh" email
« on: May 22, 2011, 07:50:43 PM »
I get emails from the contact page on my site all day long. Most of them are from people who think they're emailing one of the stores that advertise on my site. Some of the emails are the "I want to buy a gun. How much does it cost?" type.

This one today, though, made me worry for the couple. I don't see any way this could go well for them, unless they have the right papers to bring the gun into the US:

Email address:
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Subject:

P-38 German Lugar for sale

Comments:

my husband inherited this war trophy from his father and wants to seel it. We live in Costa Rica but Ihave the gun here in San Diego for about one wee3k. Do you buy or consign gfuns? Where can I go to sell this gun?

Easy one, just delete it and forget about it.

I'm thinking, yeah, maybe best to delete and forget.  This isn't your problem.

I too say to delete or not reply.

However, if your conscience will not allow that, I'd tell them to just find a local gun store that could help them with the proper import paperwork.

(Not that it isn't already "too late" but that it's at least a quasi-legal answer, and might get them in the right direction. Perhaps they did not actually transport the firearm, but it is "theirs", and some relation here in the U.S. was storing it for them.

Or they're US citizens who who live in CR, with relatives and a home base here.  There are way this could be legitimate, but it's not ML's problem.

I replied, said that it sounded like a problem, and gave the woman a gun store's phone number so that she could get their input. (It's CA; their laws are a mess).

She replied back to say that the Luger has been in the US all this time, and that they wanted to sell the grandfather's gun while they were here in San Diego. Whole different ball game.

It sure sounded like another ATF horror story at the outset, though.

I've never seen a "P-38 German Lugar" . . . maybe a joint project with Walther and DWM, in the same spirit as the Colt/Ruger Python Redhawk revolver?

I'm guessing it is a P-38, and they just think it's also a Luger because of the shared German heritage and the look of the skinny uncovered barrel they both share.

Yes.

A friend had one he kept for home defense. We took our guns to the range. When he clicked his off safety, it fired.

I'm guessing the explicit lack of "after he pulled the trigger" was intentional? :(

Is that a "double-action" safety ?

Interesting. I wonder if it was a "last ditch" production 1944/45 gun.

Maybe Hitler knew most German soldiers wouldn't commit suicide, so he had a feature built into the P-38 as an assist.
