Do you have any friends that can loan you the use of a pickup or an SUV?

Alternatively, if you find a decent deal on a truck, and have the cash to front for it, you would likely be able to sell it for only a minor loss.  (Buy a pickup for $2000, sell it a few weeks later for $1800).  It's a lot of hassle though.

For example, I just heard on "Tradio" about a 1989 Ford 150 2wd for $2000.

I think that's even more than $1680. ;)

With buying a truck, I have to worry about it needing repairs on the trip. (Not to mention the bike. I've had a lot of $$$$ repairs on that bike on trips).

Not down here in AL yet. A neighbor would probably have lent me his, but they're moving June 1st.

Run a search on vehicle relocation services.  Used to be you could drive a car or truck one way for fuel and insurance costs.  Organizing A to B by relocation vehicle, B to C by motorcycle, and C to A by a different relocation vehicle might be a chore, but may be possible.  A fair bit of my travel in Australia was by either free or deeply discounted rental relocation.
Gee, I'd love to see your data!

Well, yeah - but then you own the pickup.

Maybe you could Fedex yourself and the bike to New Mexico

I am not a mechanic or a welder but I think just about any vehicle could pull a motorcycle and a single axle bike trailer. What is the smallest hitch that you could have welded to your Saturn? Bike trailers are for sale everywhere and they would allow you to utilize the car you already own, and it's possible the cost of welding a hitch and buying a trailer is less than renting a bike or truck for the week.

This has interested me for awhile as I only really own a pickup in case I need to haul bikes around. It's just a 92 Chevy V6 1500 but it's overkill for 99% of my driving and I could get the job done easier with the smallest platform that could tow 1000-1500 pounds.

Who says you cannot?  Rail express is not dead, although REA did go out of business.

Which raises another suggestion - send it by motor freight and meet up with it, then motor freight home.  Check the rates to see if it fits your budget.
