Cabela's coming to north of Seattle!
« on: May 26, 2011, 12:35:41 PM »
Cabela's first came into Washington state about two years ago.  Their sole location in Washington is in the Olympia area about 60 miles south of Seattle and 90 miles south of me.  I have gone to that store several times when I have had to go to the hospital in Olympia on business.  I have often wished it was closer to me.

In the local paper this morning, I read that Cabela's is in the final stages of negotiation on building a store at the Quil Ceda center, on the Tulalip Indian Reservation about 20 miles north of me.

Happy, happy dance, since we don't have Bass Pro, Gander or some of the other big-box hunting/camping/fishing stores that are so common in other areas of the country.

There's one about 45 miles from me in Dundee, MI.  I only go a few times per year but I make a day of it.  Cabela's is the only store where I can shop around for hours.  I generally hate shopping.

Maybe I'm just cheap, but I think much of what they have is overpriced.  Guns, ammo and reloading stuff is the big exception.  I usually get some sort of wild game sandwich at their cafe, buy what I want from the gun section, and look at everything else that I can find much cheaper elsewhere.

Considering that Bass Pro's gun counter is a PC Fudd-fest, and Gander Mountain prices are highway robbery, it's even better news.

The only thing even better than that is news Sportsman's Warehouse is/was coming to town.

We had one in the SW Milwaukee metro, but they closed it when the chain sold and reorganized.   :'(
I promise not to duck.

Good for you. I have both within fifteen minutes of my house, and I like Cabela's more, although Bass Pro has some good stuff, too.

Also, my Bass Pro won't buy used guns. Cabela's gave me a fair price on the one I just sold. They have racks of used rifles and shotguns that you can actually, ya know, touch.

Our Cabela's has The Gun Library, with a number of fine old guns.

They will attack you at the door, and give you no peace until you sign up for a Cabelas credit card.  ;/

Not just fill out the papers ... they run the credit check and produce your card right then and there.  You can buy something on it before you leave the store.

At the Michigan store, they do approach you as soon as you walk in the door.  But if you tell them "No, thanks" they will leave you alone.  I don't have any problem with them asking me if I am interested in a credit card.

The first thing I hit at Cabelas is the bargain cave. Plus you can even negotiate with them some more.
I go to the one in Hamburg PA. About a hr drive for me, but my grandmother is near by so two birds with one stone.

Nice.  That's only 25-30 miles south of me.  Should be a lot better that Sportsmans Whorehouse Wholesale Sports that's local.

Cabela's, Isn't that another one of those places you go to actually put your hands on something you are interested in before going home and buying it online for a considerable savings?
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.

Yes!

But Cabela's is an experience.  You don't have to buy anything to enjoy going there.

True, but I try to reward the fact that they carry a lot of stuff other stores don't.  They have things you can't get at Dicks, Sports Authority, Gander Mtn, and even Bass Pro.  The employees are polite and generally helpful and the stores are an experience in of themselves.  I'll spend a little more to make sure that doesn't go away.

There's a Cabela's about 5 minutes from my house.
I love it.
Its a great place to go kill some time- just looking at stuff, even better, its a great place to take the kids, they love the fish tanks.
If you use credit cards and don't have a cabela's card yet, get one!
I put every bill and purchase on a Cabela's card, which means that once a year or so I can walk into Cabela's and walk out with a free or nearly free gun. Last fall I bought a new 870 express which I got almost 'free' and I just recently picked up a 480 Super redhawk for $180ish out-the-door after points and a $100 coupon.
Yes there are other cards that give you bteer rewards, but you can't buy new curtains or a new washing machine at Cabelas, so it get spent on fun stuff

The only negative about the Cabela's nearby, was that the Sportsman's Warehouse went out of business. I'm not sure if it had to do with Cabela's coming or not as the 2 other SW's in our state went out of business at about the same time. SWs have much better selections and prices of shooting/reloading/knives etc.
The nearby Gander Mountain has become a joke unless you want to pay $30/lb for powder, $65 for a box of WWB .45, or $10 for a box of Wolf 7.62x39.

No, it's the place to go where they don't have what you want but they can order it for you.

Actually, they did have some of the things I was looking for.  I got the shotgun barrel for DaughterPine 2.0.

They kept bugging us about getting a card, and finally offered us $20 off our purchase that day.  They said "five minutes" but it was more like thirty.

Huh?  They have a better selection than most stand-alone gun stores. ???

If they order it in, they will ship it free to your house- not bad service, any way you look at it.

No, I was looking for a leather saddle scabbard to carry such a rifle.  They had two in their catalog and I wanted to compare them.

And no - they didn't ship it to our house, we had to pick it up 2 weeks later at the store.  And they gave my wife a big hassle about it because I wasn't there.

Frankly, it hasn't been a good "shopping experience"
