Fone Phishing?
« on: June 06, 2011, 01:06:39 PM »
SWMBO just got a phone call.  After hearing her say "hello" a couple of times, she went silent for about a minute.  Then she said "I hear what you're saying, but I don't know what you're talking about", then she hung up.  I asked her what that was all about.  She said it was some guy named "Victor" who said he was getting error messages from her computer and he needed her Windows license number.

She done good.  And no, the number he was calling from was blocked.  I couldn't send it to Microsoft.

Good ol' fashioned social engineering.  I don't know if I'd bother sending it to MS even if I had the number.  I doubt there's much they'd or even had the power to pursue.

I got several text messages on my phone (seemingly) from a FCU in northern New Mexico a few months back. My daughter got them on her phone too, same area code and prefix.

"Your accounts have been compromised and we need you to go to xyz website immediately to prevent further damage" or something to that effect.  Uhhh, sure.  ;/

Apparently it was quite the concerted effort, as many folks contacted the state AG's office about it and there were articles in the newspaper and on the t.v. news.

She did very good.

Only way to do better would be to say, "I'm sorry, I'm in the middle of something right now. Can I have your phone number to call you back?"
I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.

So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you also were meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought

My sister in law had the same thing happen.  Microsoft does take an interest, actually.

It's a scam - they try to get information from you just like nigerian scammers.
