Operation "Second Dog"
« on: June 19, 2011, 01:23:16 AM »
Had our pup (GSP/American Bulldog mix) for going on a year now, and looking to add to the family. He's only 70 lbs and we're hoping to find something a bit bigger. Hit up several shelters and nothing really stood out. Introduced him to one gorgeous black pit, but it was a young dog and they didn't hit it off. We're thinking July 4 weekend we'll try again, an extra day to get the newb used to the new pack.

Oh, and if anyone knows of an Irish Wolfhound needing adoption in the PNW that gets along with other dogs and kids, let me know. I freaking love those small horses dogs.

My rule is that the cumulative weight of dog in the house cannot exceed my weight.  Since SWMBO vastly prefers larger dogs that works well to keep the canine popluation under control.  When we still had Gracie in addition to Sarah (litter mates) that put the weight of dogs at 160lbs.  As I weigh a little under 200lbs that meant at the time nothing over 35lbs or so, which was already too small for her tastes.  After we had to put Gracie down several years ago SWMBO has since decided she doens't want another dog until after Sarah has passed.

I think I've got her convinced to get an Anatolian when that time comes.

And Balog, try the breed rescue for wolfhounds.

Adively: I check it every day, but I also try not to get too attached until I can meet the dog. It's like online dating: good for an introduction but you wouldn't want to get hitched sight unseen. ;)

Thanks BSL :) I thought of the breed rescue orgs, but they're in (iirc) CA and TX. And I just can't bring myself to adopt a dog I haven't met yet.

Balog,
I know that.  SWMBO was cruising Petfinder a few years ago for a Boston Terrier.  We did find and adopt one from Petfinder.  Good luck.

Check with them, though. Their location isn't nessasarly where the dogs are. A lot of times breeders and kennels will foster the dogs while rescues find the homes. We get Anatolians all the time.
Also, another really AWESOME way to get a REALLY AWESOME DOG, find a local breeder and ask if they have a dog ready for retirement or needs rehoming.

Former show dogs are usually some of the most awesome dogs you can get. They're already crate train, leash broken, housetrained and everything, plus they tend to be very outgoing and happy.
A llt of the best pets I see at work are these dogs. sometimes the females have already been spayed because the breeder already got pups from them or doesn't want them bred again for some reason. The only downside is they rarely want the males neutured because they may want to collet the boys at a later date.

Hmmm, that is a really smart idea. Thanks BSL! :)

Also, sumpnz... That gives me about 130 lbs of dog to go, I feel like that's reasonable. :D

With just Sarah we could get a 120lb dog and the rule would still be adheared to.  But not for long.  I'm already 15+lbs down off my peak.  Goal is to get back under 175lbs.  Only 20lbs to go on that goal.
