Mold and midew remover
« on: June 25, 2011, 02:28:33 PM »
I'm working on getting my see doo up and running today.
So far I have replaced 8 gallons of paint thinner with gas.
Washed it.
Have the battery charging right now, hopefully it comes back to life. I hate how expensive those small batteries are.

But I have a serious mildew problem inside.
Its on all over the place on the hull, engine, hoses, and wiring.
What can I spray around that will get rid of it without and scrubbing (can't reach most of it) and won't corrode everything.
Bleach is out for the corrosive reason.
I needed a mod to change my signature because the concept of "family friendly" eludes me.
Just noticed that a mod changed my signature. How long ago was that?

Why the hating on bleach?  You were planning to rinse with clear water after a while, no?

stay safe.

X-14.  But anything that kills mildew or mold has to be rinsed after a bit.

There's a dairy equipment cleaner I buy in gallon jugs at Fleet Farm that's 10% Benzalkonium chloride.  I think it's called Stearamine.  (don't get the one with phosphoric acid in it)  It'll kill mold and mildew and bacteria, and it's not corrosive.  Mix it up about 1 ounce to a gallon.  It's also great for eliminating odors (it has an odd "fresh" smell to it)

It's also available in garden centers in small bottles in a 20% formulation called "Consan Triple Action 20".
"It's good, though..."

Don't dive shops sell an enzymatic defunker for dive gear?
For the invisible things of him since the creation of the world are clearly seen, being perceived through the things that are made, even his everlasting power and divinity, that they may be without excuse. Because knowing God, they didn’t glorify him as God, and didn’t give thanks, but became vain in their reasoning, and their senseless heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools.

I could not find any of this stuff. Tried tractor supply and the local grain and feed. They had the best answer "I think its on of those things you can't buy in NJ anymore" Try the agway over the bridge.

So I went to Napa to get something to paint my rusting oil pan with before it rots through.
Por15, good stuff I was told. The same company makes a cleaner and degrease.
Holly bat turds batman. I give this stuff 3 thumbs up. Spray on and rinse off. Cleaned the oil pan without even trying.
I sprayed some of it around the inside of the Jet ski also. Shazam Shazam. I think I will come up for uses for this stuff.

I'm disappointed.  Nearly ten hours and nobody said it.

I was gonna suggest Napalm.
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.

It's six more hours now and the urge is still there, and  I'm just barely resisting it.

You can't use detcord for mold/mildew.  All that does is spread it around.

You need to lift off and nuke it from orbit.

stay safe.

Wrong again. That just spreads it as well, but at escape velocity. What is called for here is a singularity device.

simple green*, and a stiff nylon brush**. but beware that it removes all lubricants. [tinfoil] oh, and no it wont kill the stuff in some materials but when dealing with nonporous surfaces it's worked for me before.

*straight on a wet surface is the most affective method but 1:10 in water is less likely to mess anything up.

** i like the shape of my sparta hand and nail brush for such things, walmart used to sell a bigger version without the shorter section. ;) from china of course

Vinegar, we used to use it to clean mildewed canvas tents. Will need to be rinsed off though.

Gawd, I can't stand the smell of vinegar.  Used to use glacial acetic acid in photographic stop baths... probably got my hatred of it there.

I'm told that borax kills mold and mildew.

Also, ants, if you mix it about 20-30% with sugar.

Well, I don't think you were supposed to be drinking the stuff.  :P

 =D

Once the vinegar, which should be diluted quite a bit with water BTW, was rinsed out no odor remained.
