I grew up not generally wearing shoes inside the house, so I usually don't. I'm just more comfortable in the house going around in my socks.

Tall Pines, I never got the boots thing so we are even.
If wearing something that is comfortable makes one a Hippie, well if the Birkinstock doesn't fit you must acquit. And they fit very comfortably. My ex left me after 30 years for her "Favorite Hippy DJ" and that's a quote. [barf]

You might "get it" around here with the cactus and snakes   :P

I don't wear flip-flops at all, except in strange showers.

My sandals are Teva-type with ankle and cross foot straps at a minimum and won't come off if I have to run (and you can no more predict when "runnin' time" might come than you can any other potentially bad occurance).  I seldom wear anything open-toed when I'm not around water regardless.

Unless the rest of me is also "unprotected" I try to always have on some kind of real footwear even in the house.  I will switch like Mr. Rogers from boots and such to house shoes (lace-up sneakers).

I figure you'll never know when you need to scoot or fight and you never want to be wearing any kind of footwear that can just fall off.

no flip-flops for me,  can't stand that thing between the toes.  use crocs much of the summer as they don't mind getting wet  (at least they don't stink when they do get wet).  8" work boots during the winter, and yes they are removed before entering (the carpets last longer!).

We don't require folks to remove shoes.  All of our floors are ceramic or porcelain tile and a small oak floored guest bedroom and my "office" has an oak floor.  A couple of heavy small rugs are inside the doors for handy shoe wiping.

I usually wear Keens or Birkenstocks around the house and outside in the yard or around the lake.  We're not home in the winter anymore, but when we were, usually heavy socks or slippers for comfort.

With a hyperactive, sheds-everywhere indoor dog like ours, shoes are almost mandatory....that, and the fact that the wood-grain linoleum in every room of the house gets cold and slick during the cooler months....

I worked at someone's house a few years back where they insisted that we do carpentry work in stocking feet.  Screw that!

I guess it's also an Asian thing to not wear shoes in the house, since that's how most of us were brought up here in Hawaii.  It's automatic here to take your shoes off before stepping anywhere into someone's house.  I can't fathom coming home from work and tracking the residue of everything I've stepped on throughout the day into my house.  Yes I know that's what the "welcome" matts are for, but they don't get everything off.  What if you step in something awful and don't realize it?

On the other hand, whenever we stay in hotels, we wear our shoes or at least flip flops in the room.

Acquit. That's good! Point to you!

As to your ex, she and hippy dj probably deserve each other then.

All, never.

But if you are going to be in the area, drop me a PM.

Right now I only have one horse that we can ride.  The colt went to my daughter, we had to put the mare down, and the mare that we adopted has never been ridden.

I'm barefoot or wearing flipflops in the summer, socks in the winter.

So far I have yet to find a pair of "waterproof" boots that actually stays dry longer then two weeks at my job, so my boots come off the second I get home so my poor feet can dry out.

As for guests, well, I would actually highly prefer they keep their shoes on because
a. Many, many people do not seem to understand simple hygine for feet and I don't want to smell the stanky or see the funky.
b. I have three dogs, three cats and very little intrest in trying to keep the floors of this place clean. I don't give a *expletive deleted*it, I go barefoot outside so it doesn't bother me, but I doubt others would want to run around here like I do.

We have cactus, snakes and 'gators in Florida. No need for riding horses either, but I would wear appropriate footwear if riding horseback was called for.

It's barbaric and uncivilized to wear shoes inside. Only crude, dirty people walk around routinely in their houses with shoes. Yuck. That's the way I was raised, and we DID have mud-rooms for the purpose. I don't like wearing shoes anyway. If it wasn't such a big deal, I would go barefoot outside more.

Of course I am tolerant of other cultures so I don't really hate people who wear shoes in the house, but I also avoid having people over for this amount thousands of other reasons.

So nice to know you don't "really" hate the majority of people on this board, and are content merely to call them crude dirty barbaric and uncivilized. And I'm sure your many, many friends are devastated that they can't come over to your house.

Sheesh,  I didn't think this would get so divisive. What was I thinking? =D

Maybe I should explain a bit more about the parking here. The mgmt. has some contractor go through periodically and "re-asphalt". I have no idea what it is, but it ain't asphalt. Combined with the dust that blows frequently, and the scarcity of rain to wash it all away, shoes can get really nasty in short order. I don't think I'm being unreasonable, andI do have mats inside and out for folks who refuse.
A thought... most places of business have mats, designed specifically for scuffing shoes on when entering. I do that as habit. Seems such behavior used to be a common courtesy. Maybe I'm just too old fashioned.

Oh darn, I was going to propose an APS visit to zahcs house were we all walk around his place with our boots on.

Actually I'm serious--it's just that my mind has been slowly warped because I work in semiconductor cleanrooms all the time, which makes my house a filthy slumland in comparison. Which is why I have installed sticky mats and air showers at all points of entry, and keep my home at positive pressure with a vertical laminar HEPA-filtered HVAC system.

My apartment is 80% carpet, including the bathroom and entryway, so the shoes come off at the door. I prefer bare feet anyways.

Hmm. I worked at AMD (FAB 25) in Austin for a bit. Wonder if there's a correlation there?

No shoes in my house. We do not make a point of attacking guests and making them de-shoe, but we do notice who respects us enough to notice our practices and who doesn't.
