Oregon Non-Resident CCW
« on: August 25, 2011, 12:04:48 AM »
For any of you in states bordering Oregon, I wanted to give a ginormous thumbs up to the Grant County Sheriff's office and Sheriff Glenn Palmer.

I stopped in there to get my non-resident CCW permit this morning. It's a very small office with just incredibly nice people. I was done in 15 minutes, and they livescan you and run their background check while you wait. They actually took my picture, made the card for me, and had me sign it while I was there. All that's left is waiting for the FBI background check on the prints and then they drop the card in the mail to me. Cost is $65 and they only do non-resident permits on Wednesdays.

The Sheriff is in Canyon City but I stayed in John Day (about five minutes up the road). Really neat little town. Looks like they cater to the hunting crowd during the season, and  I saw deer all over the place (unusual for Western muleys) including a really nice three pointer just strutting down the road outside of town. Grab a steak at the Outpost.

What did you need in the way of training documentation (or what did you use)? I am about 3 hours or so north of there and am thinking about taking a trip down.

He's really liberal  on training docs. If you already have a permit, he may accept that, depending on state of issue. He does require copies of all CCW permits you currently hold. The CCW class I took in CA (for non-resident permits, not CA permit) covered FL, UT, VA, and OR so I also used that, along with a tactical pistol training cert, but I was kinda overkill just because I didn't want to make a two day drive and show up with the wrong docs. :)

He also accepts most NRA training courses and he accepts the Maryland online safety course (that course lets you print your cert on your computer).

Here's a link to the application. Be sure to follow directions EXACTLY, and to include the stamped, self addressed envelope. You will greatly impress Sally (who you should call a week prior so she knows you're coming).

  • I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that.

Holy crap - double ginormous thumbs up. Got home from work today and my license was in my mailbox. Taking delivery time into account, that's a 48 hour max turnaround for processing.
