murder in our small town
« on: August 21, 2011, 09:36:41 PM »
late last night i was driving home and my usual route was blocked off with police cars.  today i find out that one of the residents on that street killed someone.  allegedly it was over $40 from a drug deal gone wrong.  if it is who i am thinking it is, i have said hi to him as i am walking the kids to school.  we always think we are so lucky and that nobody would hurt us here.  i guess it just goes to show that you never know how safe an area is.

Crime is crime, but thanks for the ... reassurance.  =)

I grew up around a town of 3500 people.  It was obvious to me that all the same problems of crime and politics occurred there as in big cities, just on a smaller scale.  Also, it was more likely that everyone would know about it.

our town is about the same size.  i agree with what you say about crime being everywhere.

i did get a few more details from the paper. the latest reports are that alcohol, and not drugs, was involved.  the kid who died was 20 yo, and well liked around town but he was "having a bad day".  he and the assaillent had an argument earlier in the day, when the victum came back it escalated into a fight during which a knife (i was told a "pen knife", although i think they meant pocket knife) was produced and he was stabbed in the chest.  the assaillent has only been in town for a few months and was originally from st pete, fl.  he is now in police custody charged with second degree murder.

i would hope his attorney would have the trial moved to another venue as the local environment seems a bit hostile towards him.

The little former Methodist Camp Meeting town I grew up in had a few rapes and a couple of murders in thetime I lived there 1960 thru 1973. Passions run high and all kinds of crimes occur even in a small town. Never more than 9k in population.

The difference is that when people say a guy is "well liked" or a "good person", most of the people already know his history and that a lot of stuff is being overlooked.

the plot thickens.  evidently the local police had reason to check on the assailents record the previous week.  turns out he was wanted for a felony drug charge in florida, but the florida authorities refused to extradite him.  (most likely due to the cost of flying officers around the country.)

eta: the news reprted it was a misdemeaner, not felony as i first heard.
