Well, if it ain't one thing it's another...
« on: May 01, 2006, 03:33:37 PM »
Swmbo and I were taking our pre lunch 1.5 mile walk around 11 this morning.  We live in the country so no curbs or sidewalks.  Country folk walking etiquette requires the walker to move onto the shoulder when there is an oncoming car, who is to slow and move over toward the centerline.  Well, that all happened properly except swmbo lost her footing on the unstable shoulder, turned over her ankle and fell down.

You guessed it!  She fractured the ankle in two places, but thankfully, did not displace any of the bones.  She has a good pulse in the foot, but a little numbness, cool to the touch and the outside of the left ankle is swollen and really sore.  Doc thinks the nerve is pinched a bit by the swelling at ankle near the break and will be ok when the swelling goes down.

Swmbo has a splint and a wrap and orders to stay off it for a week.  Back to doc for more x-rays, evaluation and action on a proper cast next monday.  She's in pain and pissed at herself.  I've got her in bed, propped up and leg propped up above her heart and gave her a double shot of Darvacet.   I think she's sleeping right now.

Damn, it hurts to have your partner in life to be dicombobled and in pain.  I'd like to just curl up next to her, except she'd hit me with her crutch.  Did I mention she is not a good patient?

Well, anyhoo, looks like baloney sandwiches and I'll have to wear my underwear for an extended period of time as my assigned tasks around the grampster's keep have been handling whatever occurs in the basement, garage and in the yard.

Sigh.......Does anyone know what a washer and drier looks like?  Why is the dishwasher making them funny noises?  Where does the silverwear go?  Maybe I'll just leave all that stuff in the dishwasher after it quits making them funny noises. Lord knows I won't be dirtying anything up except paper plates and I can throw those away.  Sigh.....

I'm pretty sure if you can understand the workings of an internal combustion engine, you can figure out the intricacies of washing machine water levels. If you need help, let me know and I'll create a diagram involving stick figures and one syllable words. Cheesy

I hope Mrs.Grampster gets better soon..You're right..it is hard to have someone you care about hurt like that. Take good care of her. Smiley

Grampster-- sorry to hear that.

while I know nothing of her case nor her age, I will say one thing. Be weary of osteoporosis. Of course, turned ankles at any age can cause fractures depending on the severity of the strain on the bone. However, osteoporosis frequently presents as a moderate strain that probably shouldn't break a bone but does. I also have no idea of your insurance state or finances, but perhaps it would be worthwhile for her to get a "DEXA scan" just to make sure. The DEXA measures bone density and lets a person know if they have abnormally low density indicating osteoporosis as there are treatments to help.

V,

She's had the bone density stuff.  She's in good shape generally, and particularly good in the bone density arena.  Thanks for the tip, though.

She's 65, looks 45 and has the figure of a 25 year old.  (she does read my posts sometimes)  Actually, it's the truth.

Barbara,
You put water in a washing machine?  Tongue  The stick figures might be a bit complicated.

Sorry to hear that Dick but relieved no compound comminuted fracture - then there would be some prob's.

Hopefully a good cast and some impatience while knitting will see it all pan out OK.

Meantime - well see if you can find any of that disposable paper underwear?!  Be nice to her - even if she is not a good patient - and notch up a good load of Brownie points for later Wink

Sorry to hear this Gramps, I hope she's up and about soon. I was going to make some rude comment about edible underwear solving both problems but I won't. shocked

Just remember that reds and whites are supposed to be washed together.

At least she doesn't have to explain to her mom how she broke her ankle and leg after getting wasted drinking underage as one of my friends does.

Grampster,

Sorry to hear that, I know what I went through when Sandy broke her wrist a year and a half ago.

Half our stash of salsa is being packed up as we speak.  Think that will help?  It's not much.

Here's a tip: *Quiznos*.  They have the best chicken noodle soup, just ask Sandy.

Seriously, pm or email me your phone #, we could talk.

On a happier note, mom came home today.

Chris,

Dad stopped over Saturday when we had the grandkids here. He told me the "Mad Englishman" had called him. Cheesy  He was glad to hear from you.  He's been a lonely guy lately.  Mom's coming home today helped immensely.

Thanks for your help.

Now back to Grampster's problem...

Well Grampster, I'm really sorry about Mrs Grampster. As you all know I broke my arm. Well I don't think very many of you realize how hard it is to say "I can't do this".

Now I am trying to help Larry's Mom and Dad. He can't do ANYTHING right. He doesn't know how to cook. I wonder why? She has been cooking for him for 58 years. I just want you to know if she gets grouchy it's not because you did something wrong or you didn't know how to do something. It's because she can't do it for you.

I hope you have a lot of patience! And I hope she gets well soon.

Please let us know if we can do anything. Sandy

Well, we're rearanging stuff so she can get around.  I put an old elevated chair that we used to use around our kitchen island (that I just couldn't force myself to throw away) in her bathroom so she can sit at her sink and do her woman stuff.  She's in a better mood today.  Sandy, you're right.  Lynn is the commander of the Keep and it frustrates her to not be in control. heh.
I cut a chunk off a piece of thick foam my dad used to use in his Coleman camper way back when  (I don't know why I hung onto that either) to pad the crutches a bit so it's a bit easier on her underarms.
Glad to hear that Mom is back home for the time being.  Still in our prayers for her complete recovery.

Chris, nice to hear from you, too.  As for the rest of you Tongue, your timely advice is appreciated especially the mixing of the whites and reds. Tongue  cheesy

Tell her I said to get well quickly so she can get back to cooking and cleaning and you can resume noodling around on the web all day. Smiley

Grampster,

I got to work this morning to find my computer had crashed.  Its still at the repair shop so I couldn't get your salsa shipped off (your address is in my email).  I'll write it down from the home computer tonight and mail it out tomorrow.

Take good care of Lynn!

It'll be a good thing she's on crutches when the salsa arrives.  I'll be able to eat it all before she can catch me.  Tongue

I'll have some homemade peach or cherry jelly for you later this summer.  There's a farm up by Charlevoix where we go a couple times in the summer and early fall that puts up their own jelly from peaches and cherries they grow.  MMMMMMMM.

She's feeling better today.  She decided taking the pain pills was better than gutting it out.  Usually meds like that make her nauseous, but the darvocet doesn't.

If you can eat two pints of our salsa before she catches you, you are more of a man than I!

Most likely, she'll catch you in the bathroom. Cheesy

Seriously, take care of her.  Sandy had a really tough time with her wrist (and so did I, with no clean laundry, and trying to live on my cooking).

Grampster, so how's Lynn?

I sent the salsa yesterday, priority mail.  I packed it really well but I got in trouble for not putting plastic bags around them.  Sandy says the USPS take a dim view of stuff leaking out of boxes.  Who knew?

Let me know when you get the package, and what kind of shape it's in.  You should get it either tomorrow or Monday.

Oh, and we sent one of those neat lids Steve mentioned.

Larry,
So far, I've done about 6 loads of laundry.  Used the washer and the dryer, folded stuff and put it away. I've been vacuuming rugs and dusting the floor as well. (Lots of tile in The Keep) Cleaning up after the cats as well as feeding them.   Barbara would be proud.  First time for me in 62 years, 40 of them married to Lynn.  She asked me how I liked being her.  Heh heh.  The aforementioned oughta tell you.....

A. how lazy and pathetic I am, or B. what a great mom I had till I married Lynn and she then took charge of The Keep and my pampered butt.

I've been doing breakfasts and lunches, waiting on her hand and foot.  I've actually enjoyed taking care of her.  Dinners I have been sliding down to a couple of restaurants owned by friends and they've been doing mercy take out...for a price.  Heh.

I left her alone tonight as I took the g'kids to a Griffins hockey playoff game tonight.
Manitoba Moose kicked our butts 3-1.

We're looking forward to the salsa.  That was a nice gesture on your part.  I'll reserve judgment until after I've experienced the side effects.  Tongue

I've managed to keep her fairly settled in and leg elevated.  We go back in Monday for a re-evaluation.

I'll let you know the condition of the comestibles when they arrive.
